Cousins says PM’s Cooper’s Pen visit must now be matched by lasting action

TRELAWNY, Jamaica—Opposition Spokesperson on Land Lothan Cousins is welcoming Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s visit to Cooper’s Pen, Trelawny, where some 20 families were left homeless after their homes were demolished on August 11.

“We welcome the Government’s visit to the community,” said Cousins, in a statement on Friday. “After weeks of uncertainty, we are happy that our strident advocacy has borne fruit, and we look forward to a speedy resolution of the matter in favour of the residents.”

“Approximately 40 families have been affected since the demolition, with many still without permanent shelter as the hurricane season continues. The PNP has consistently called on the Government to invoke Section 4 of the Local Communities Amenities Improvement Act, as was done at Red Hills in 2016, to protect remaining homes and provide the displaced with dignified, lasting housing solutions rather than temporary tents,” the People’s National Party (PNP) said.

Cousins thanked Dennis Meadows, PNP constituency chairman, Northern Trelawny and Councillor Garth Wilkinson of the Falmouth Division for standing firmly with the people of Cooper’s Pen throughout their ordeal.

“We look forward to working with the Government on behalf of the residents to ensure that the commitments made today are honoured, regardless of which administration is in office,” Cousins said.
