Glen Washington to be honoured with Grammy nomination certificates
In 1999, Glen Washington had a surprise hit album with Brother To Brother, produced by the legendary Clement “Coxson” Dodd for the Studio One label. It was the singer’s breakthrough after nearly 20 years in the business.
Brother To Brother opened doors for Washington. He collaborated with Capleton and Third World on their Still Blazing and Ain’t Giving Up albums, released in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
Both were nominated for Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards. Washington appears on Jah Is Gonna Work it Out on Still Blazing, and on the title song on the Third World set.
On September 15, the veteran artiste will receive Grammy Nomination Certificates during the Music In Excellence Ceremony at the Courtleigh Auditorium in Kingston.
“It is extremely important for me to be recognised as an artiste professionally, and performing music that everyone can relate to in all aspects of life,” said Washington. “We create clean and timeless music that can be played anywhere with love and respect to all music lovers and fans.”
During the 1970s, Clarendon-born Washington was drummer for The Titans, resident band at The Bohemia Club in Kingston. He recorded songs sporadically, and it was not until 1999 that he made the charts with Prisoner of Love and Love Knows No Shame, from Brother To Brother.
Washington next teamed with Lloyd Campbell who produced Rise And Shine and Kindness For Weakness, two of his biggest hits.
Just Giving Thanks, his latest album, was released in May 2025.
“My advice to younger and upcoming artistes is to record songs that everyone can relate to, listen to and enjoy without being vulgar or derogatory,” he said.
Previously known as the Grammy Certificate Ceremony, the Music In Excellence Ceremony is co-produced by Back 2 Da Future Music Limited, a London-based company operated by Kennedy Mensah, and The Royalty Network Inc, which has offices in New York.
The event will see artistes, producers and engineers who contributed to songs and albums receiving Grammy-recognised certificates and plaques sanctioned by the British Phonographic Industry.
