Campbell throws over 23m to claim Diamond trophy, extend national record

Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell stunned the track and field world on Saturday when he threw a stupendous 23.08m to win the men’s shot put on Saturday’s second day of the Wanda Diamond League Final at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.

It was the third Diamond trophy won by a Jamaican at the meet after wins by Oblique Seville in the men’s 100m and Tajay Gayle in the men’s long jump on Friday’s opening day.

Campbell’s mark is the fourth best ever in the history of the event, shattering the 22.62m he had thrown in the second round to break the Jamaican national record, the meet record and take over the world lead.

Only three Americans have thrown further- Ryan Crouser- 23.56m in May 2023, Joe Kovacs-23.23m in September 2022, and Randy Barnes-23.12m in May 1990.

Campbell, the Olympic Games bronze medalist who was breaking his own Jamaican national record for a fifth time this year, dominated the contest. His 22.25m in the first round would have still won as American Jordan Geist was second with 22.23m and Kovacs third with 22.09m.

He had extended his own Jamaican record to 22.34m in China in May, then threw 22.44m in June in Zagreb, Croatia and 22.59m in Brescia, Italy last weekend.
