PORTLAND, Jamaica —After more than US$1 million was invested in renovations and structural upgrades, Da Villa Juanita is back on the tourism market, reopening its 19-room property in Hector’s River, Portland, following a prolonged closure triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Management said the shutdown was used to carry out major improvements and prepare the property for its return to the hospitality sector.

The property, located near Happy Grove High School, first opened in 2019 but suspended operations in 2020 as the pandemic disrupted travel and the hospitality sector.

Proprietor Laeron Leroy Lewis said the reopening comes as road improvements and increased public transportation have made travel between Kingston, St Thomas and Portland easier.

“We are here to stay and deliver in a big way,” Lewis said.

He said the improved connectivity is contributing to increased economic activity in communities across eastern Portland.

Portland Mayor Paul Thompson said the reopening would add to the parish’s accommodation capacity and provide another base for visitors to the eastern section of the parish.

“For too long, Portland’s tourism dollars have been concentrated heavily around Port Antonio and the west,” Thompson said.
“The resurgence of a 19-room facility in Hector’s River changes the playing field entirely,” he added.

He said the Portland Municipal Corporation supports investment that expands the parish’s room stock and contributes to sustainable tourism.

The reopening is also being welcomed by businesses in surrounding communities.

Marcia Lawrence, operator of Jaz, an eatery and coffee stop in Zion Hill, said increased visitor numbers could create additional demand for local food and services.

“When visitors stay at Da Villa, they want authentic Jamaican experiences, and they will travel to find it,” Lawrence said.

Transport and tour operator Michael Adams said the availability of accommodation could encourage visitors to spend more time in eastern Portland.

“Having a reliable, high-quality place to sleep means travellers aren’t just passing through east Portland on a day trip anymore; they are staying overnight,” Adams said.

The property is within travelling distance of attractions including Reach Falls and Bath Fountain.

It also has access to the Scott’s River Natural Mineral Springs, with the spring source located on the estate. The spring water flows into streams that run through the property and eventually reach a waterfall. The area supports fish, crawfish and crabs.

Telef Hall, owner of Roots 21 restaurant in Port Antonio and an event organiser, said the property could provide a venue for entertainment and cultural activities in the area.
“Da Villa is the perfect catalyst for a vibrant weekend local entertainment scene,” Hall said.

He suggested activities such as live music, eco-events and weekend markets as possible additions to the area’s tourism offerings.

The reopening comes as improved road connections are increasing access to eastern Portland, where tourism activity has traditionally been concentrated farther west around Port Antonio.
