Your Next Ocho Rios Food Crawl? Make It All Chicken! (Part 2)

Your Next Ocho Rios Food Crawl? Make It All Chicken! (Part 2)

Smoke, spice and comfort food: Three Ocho Rios kitchens, one shapeshifting way to serve The Best Dressed Chicken.

Ocho Rios does not agree on much when it comes to chicken, and that’s the whole point. One kitchen sets it over open flame and lets the smoke do most of the seasoning. Another tucks it into pasta and curry at a table strung with fairy lights. A third piles it onto wings built for a long night at the bar. Three completely different philosophies, one bird, and somehow it never gets old.

“I’m on the road across Jamaica constantly for work, and what I love most is seeing how many different ways there are to enjoy chicken,” says Arielle Oliver, brand manager at The Best Dressed Chicken. “Every kitchen stays true to its own style, and that’s what I love about food. It tells you exactly who a place is.”

Here’s a way to test that theory: Pick three days, three different kitchens, and order chicken every time. The pattern is obvious by the third plate. Each restaurant has found its own reason to put chicken at the centre of the table, and none of them are the same reason.

Plantation Smokehouse sits just outside Ocho Rios next door to Richmond Estate, all open rafters and a live band most Fridays. Here, smoke and fire do the talking. The jerk chicken is bold, unmistakably Jamaican, and not up for negotiation. From there, go rich with the Stuffed Chicken Breast, or swerve entirely into the Korean Fried Chicken, a hard left in flavour that somehow still works.

Miss T’s Kitchen meanwhile occupies a garden down a quiet lane off Main Street, string lights overhead, no walls in sight. This is also the restaurant that landed on national American television when TODAY with Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones broadcast live from Ocho Rios. Chef/patron Anna-Kay Tomlinson’s warmth made her an instant hit with viewers, and one plate here explains exactly why. Jamaica’s classics stay front and centre, with just enough room to play. The Jerk Chicken Pasta shouldn’t work as well as it does. Curry Chicken goes deep and rich, while the classic Jerk Chicken plays it straight and still wins.

John Crow’s Tavern in the meantime holds down a corner of Main Street, sports on every screen and a crowd that never quite leaves before last call. This is the full tavern treatment: Tavern Chicken Wings built for sharing, assuming anyone at the table can be trusted to keep count. The Fluffy Chicken Sandwich goes soft and comforting, while Wild Fire Jerk Chicken turns the heat back up just when things were getting civilised.

By the third plate, one thing is obvious. Chicken never tastes like the same dish twice here, no matter how many times it turns up on the menu, and that’s exactly why it isn’t the safe order in Ocho Rios. It’s the one worth paying attention to.

Two favourites, one plate. Miss T’s Kitchen pairs creamy pasta with smoky jerk chicken in a combination that shouldn’t work as well as it does. (Photo: Aceion Cunningham)
