KINGSTON, Jamaica — Oblique Seville just failed to add the World Athletics Ultimate Championships title to his World Championships and Diamond League titles after placing second in the men’s 100m final on Saturday’s second day at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary.

American Kenny Bednarek spoiled the party after he ran a season’s best 9.85 seconds (-0.6m/s) to beat the Jamaican who repeated the 9.90 seconds he ran to lead the semi-finals.

Another American Ronnie Baker was third in 9.93 seconds.

Jonielle Smith was fourth in the women’s 100m with 10.94 seconds (-0.2m/s), the same time awarded to her compatriot Tina Clayton while Lavanya Williams was seventh in 11.07 seconds.

American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden ran a world-leading 10.62 seconds to win the trophy, just beating Julien Alfred of St Lucia- 10.74 seconds with Sha’Carrie Richardson of the USA third in 10.76 seconds.

National record holder Nickisha Pryce was third in the women’s 400m final, running 49.56 seconds as favourite Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic won with 49.07 seconds, coming from fourth place over the last 120 metres to take the trophy.

Norway’s Henriette Jaeger was second in 49.28m.

In the other final that included a Jamaican, Diamond League winner Tajay Gayle was fifth in the men’s long jump with a best of 7.90m (-0.1m/s), getting only three jumps as only the top four advanced to the fourth and final round.

Gayle improved with each jump, starting with 7.52m (1.0n/s); he then had a 7.72m (-0.2m/s) jump in the second round.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games champion Sanique Walker who ran a big personal best of 53.77 seconds and Rushell Clayton, advanced to Sunday’s final of the women’s 400m hurdles.

Walker lowered her personal best from 54.00 seconds that she set while winning at the Commonwealth Games to place third in her semi-final, running from lane nine, behind Americans Jasmine Jones who ran a season’s best 52.77 seconds and Anna Cockrell, 53.31 seconds.

Clayton was fourth in her semi-final with 53.84 seconds after she came off the seventh hurdle in seventh place.

Emma Zapletalova of Slovakia won with 52.93 seconds, followed by Panama’s Gianna Woodruff- 53.73 seconds and Belgium’s national record holder Paulien Couckuyt- 53.81 seconds.

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Navasky Anderson just missed advancing to the men’s 800m final, finishing fifth in the first semi-final in 1:44.83, just behind Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyoni who got fourth place in 1:44.43 and a place in the final.
