PROMOTED Tru-Juice FC made a brilliant start to the Jamaica Premier League after hammering former champions Mount Pleasant FA 4-0 at Bramwell Clarke Complex in Linstead on Sunday.

It was the first game in the JPL for a team from Linstead, and the players gave their fans a lot to cheer for with a historic win over one of the Caribbean’s top teams.

Former champions Cavalier FC, as well as Montego Bay United and Tivoli Gardens, were also winners on Sunday.

Rodave Murray, in the 50th and 57th minutes, and Daniel Roberts in the 10th and 43rd, scored two each for Tru-Juice. Roberts struck their first goal in the JPL when he turned a cross from Gadail Irving into the Mount Pleasant goal.

At Jarrett Park, Deonjay Brown, in the first half, and Dwight Merrick, in the second period, scored to give Montego Bay a 2-0 victory over Chapelton Maroons.

Javier Ainstein, the new Montego Bay United coach, said the team showed signs it is on the right path.

“It’s important to win. We have some moments, trying to take the possession of the ball. In some moments we suffered a little, [like] at the end of the first half and in one moment [in] the second half. But we have a very deep roster [and] the changes made a difference,” he reasoned.

He noted that players and technical staff are still in the process of getting to know each other.

“At the start of a season and with a new team, to win is really important. To earn confidence [so] that the players believe in me, and me believe in the players, is really important. I am trying to know them better,” said Ainstein

Craig Butler, the Chapelton Maroons technical director, said they will be better as the season progresses.

“I think we have 38 games left; I think it’s the first game of the season. We have a great coaching staff, we have done great recruitment. We’re working a little bit more on the jelling and ensuring the system is adhered to, and we’ll be fine.

“It’s first game of the season. I don’t think the boys played badly… it was a difficult day on all sides,” Butler said.

The opening goal came when Brown got to a cross from Devontae Campbell to head into the Chapelton goal in the 22nd minute. Then in the 85th minute Brown provided the cross for substitute Merrick to volley home from just outside the six-yard box.
