Mt Pleasant, Portmore United advance to Caribbean Cup semis
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Defending champions Mt Pleasant FA and Portmore United are both through to the semi-finals of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup after wins over Cavalier FC and Cibao FC respectively on Thursday.
Mt Pleasant FA topped Group B with seven points after edging former champions Cavalier FC 1-0 at the National Stadium, while a Corey Burke double saw Portmore United beat Cibao 2-1 in the Dominican Republic to finish on six points, same as Salcedo but with more goals scored.
The results mean that at least one Jamaican club will qualify for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Cavalier, who had been eliminated from semi-final contention before the start of the game, finished at the foot of the table on two points and was the only team in the competition that failed to score a goal in their four games.
After a slow start, Mt Pleasant, who had to qualify through the CFU Club Shield, were unbeaten in their last three games, winning back-to-back games, after edging Portmore United 1-0 in the previous round.
On Thursday, Nickalia Fuller punished a poor clearance from goalkeeper Tawayne Lynch as his clearance went only about 20 yards and hit one of his own players.
Fuller pounced on the loose ball and curled it into the far right corner of the goal in the 39th minute.
In the Dominican Republic, Burke scored once in either half, opening the scoring with a powerful header in the 31st minute and then adding a second in the 69th minute.
Jean Lopez pulled a goal back for the home team when he converted from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
