Seven-time champions and last season’s finalists Cornwall College scored a statement 20-0 win over Troy High in Montego Bay to open their account in the ISSA Ben Francis Cup competition yesterday.

Other former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Glenmuir High, Rusea’s High, and Edwin Allen were also winners and advanced to the second round that will be played next Saturday.

Under the guidance of first-year Coach Leacroft Lettman, Cornwall College led 13-0 at half-time against a hapless Troy High team whose goalkeeper Jawayne Jarrett made a series of good saves despite the lop-sided margin.

National junior representative Carlondo Morris led the way with six goals, getting the first after just 38 seconds. Shakeem Gibson scored four, Ameche Robinson scored three, and Christopher Allen got a brace.

Mekhi Foster, Demarco Finnikin, Aiden Earle, Aleko Henry, and an own goal accounted for the other goals.

STETHS got the better of another former champion, Charlemont High, beating them 3-1 in the second game of a double-header played at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

Timmari Roach gave STETHS the lead in the first half before Malachi McMaster doubled the score midway through the second half.

Malique Pottinger halved the deficit when he scored for Charlemont High, but an own goal late in the game gave STETHS the win.

Glenmuir High, daCosta Cup finalists last season, got off to a big start, hammering Muschett High 16-0 while McGrath High were 15-0 winners over Horace Clarke High.

In Lucea, Rusea’s High rebounded from their 4-2 loss to Frome Technical in the daCosta Cup with a 6-0 win over Spot Valley High, led by a double from Michael Fogah.

Frome Technical also advanced, beating Browns Town High 2-1 at Frome.

Edwin Allen High, the 2021-22 winners, edged St Mary High 4-3 at Highgate Community Centre, while DeAndre Wilson scored in the fourth minute for Titchfield High to edge Black River High 1-0 at Carder Park.

Shamone Reynolds and Samuel Smith, who both scored braces as Manchester High, eliminated Lennon High 7-0, while Micheal Reid, Jevohntae Gordon, and Jahleel McKenzie also got on the score sheet.
