ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — National Commercial Bank (NCB) recently rededicated its refurbished branch in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth, after more than half a century.

In a statement, the bank said the investment comes as Santa Cruz continues to grow as a major commercial centre for the parish, with customers from across St Elizabeth relying on the branch for banking services, financial advice and business support.

It also follows a challenging period for the parish, which has faced significant disruption from hurricanes Beryl and Melissa.

Executive Vice President of NCB’s Retail Banking Division, Perrin Gayle, said branches such as Santa Cruz remain an important part of how NCB serves customers, even as more everyday banking moves online.

“Banking continues to evolve, and digital channels give customers greater choice, speed and convenience. Many financial decisions also benefit from a conversation with someone who understands the customer’s circumstances and can help identify the right way forward,” Gayle said.

The refurbished branch offers improved seating and waiting areas, dedicated spaces for wealth management and loans that provide customers with greater privacy, as well as a new parking lot with additional spaces.

The Santa Cruz team also continued supporting customers during the hurricane recovery period, including people seeking access to funds, financial advice and assistance as they worked to restore their homes, businesses and livelihoods.

For Eddison Hinds, whose relationship with the Santa Cruz branch spans more than 50 years, the investment represents another chapter in a relationship that has accompanied much of his life.

“I have been a customer of the Santa Cruz branch for more than 50 years, so I have seen both the branch and the community change tremendously over that time. Through the different stages of my life, NCB has remained a part of my financial journey. What has always mattered to me is having people here in Santa Cruz who know the community and understand the customers they serve. To see the branch being renewed after all these years tells me that NCB still sees Santa Cruz as an important place to invest and serve”, Hinds said.

The bank highlighted its wider support for St Elizabeth following the hurricane, with initiatives through NCB Foundation including rebuilding two homes in Black River at a cost of $2.4 million, distributing 110 care packages in Payne Town and Black River, installing 105 solar lights in Parottee and carrying out repairs at Santa Cruz Preparatory School.

Gayle said the branch will continue to play an important role in supporting the financial ambitions of customers across the parish.

“A bank’s place in a community is demonstrated by how it responds when people need support. Sometimes that means helping a customer finance a home or grow a business. At other times, it means helping a family put a roof back over its head, restoring a school building or bringing light to a community awaiting electricity,” he said.
