JDSF rallying support for Down syndrome community
THE Jamaica Down’s Syndrome Foundation (JDSF) is inviting Jamaicans to come together in celebration, support and advocacy at the upcoming Bredrin 2K Walk, under the theme ‘Stronger Together Against Loneliness’.
The event, organised by the JDSF will take place on Sunday, October 18, at the Shell Bandstand, Hope Gardens, with check-in beginning at 7:00 am and the walk starting at 8:00 am.
JDSF Chairperson Dennise Williams said the event is much more than a walk — it is an opportunity to raise awareness about Down syndrome.
“Our role is really advocacy. We want to bring the spotlight on how families, caregivers and stakeholders can really play a part in building the community, the sense of welcome, the sense of having a life worth living for persons with Down syndrome,” said Williams.
According to Williams, the event will provide an opportunity for families, friends and supporters to come together in a positive and celebratory atmosphere.
“It’s nothing too strenuous, but heavy on the fun, heavy on the community, heavy on the love,” added Williams.
She argued that this year’s theme, ‘Stronger Together Against Loneliness,’ reminds us that loneliness is not simply about being physically alone.
“For persons with Down syndrome, it can also mean feeling excluded, overlooked or disconnected from opportunities that others may take for granted, including access to healthcare, education, employment and meaningful participation in society,” added Williams.
Participants will also be able to purchase specially designed event T-shirts carrying messages celebrating persons with Down syndrome and the people who support them.
Williams said the shirts and the walk are intended to celebrate the wide network of people and organisations which contribute to creating a more inclusive society.
“And that means your church, your school, your family and your loved ones. There are just so many people who come together to make this happen,” said Williams.
The Bredrin 2K Walk aims to bring together individuals, families, friends, supporters, caregivers, schools, churches, corporate Jamaica, and members of the wider community to raise awareness, promote inclusion and demonstrate support for persons living with Down Syndrome across Jamaica.
The event is being supported by corporate partners and sponsors, including the CB Facey Foundation, Jamaica Public Service Company, National Health Fund, Digicel Foundation, Red Stripe, ND Communications, and Tim’s Big Heart Foundation.
