Jamaica is positioning itself to become a serious player in the rapidly developing world of obstacle sport with the island set to host the inaugural Jamaica Ultimate Athlete Challenge (JUAC) in November.

Jamaica Obstacle Sport Federation president Dave Cameron says the JUAC represents a Jamaican-owned sport-tourism property with the potential to attract athletes, visitors and corporate Jamaica while creating a pathway for young athletes into international competition and the Olympic movement.

“This event will bring Jamaican, regional, and international athletes together with selected Jamaican corporate teams. It will demand fitness, speed, endurance, teamwork, coordination, courage, strategy, and resilience. Those are qualities that Jamaica understands very well,” said Cameron at the event’s launch Thursday at the Sports Development Foundation headquarters.

The inaugural JUAC is scheduled for November 19-22, with the main competition set for Saturday, November 21 at Tru-Juice Farms in St Catherine.

Cameron said the multi-stage obstacle course will test athletes physically and mentally while also showcasing Jamaica’s natural beauty, hospitality and competitive spirit.

“It is about announcing a Jamaican vision: a vision that brings together sport, tourism, entertainment, youth development, international competition, and the extraordinary spirit of our people,” he said.

A major part of Cameron’s pitch is the event’s connection to the international development of obstacle sport.

He pointed to the integration of World Obstacle into the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), which has strengthened the sport’s international governance structure and created a potential pathway for Jamaican athletes to pursue Olympic opportunities.

Obstacle racing has replaced equestrian jumping as one of the disciplines in modern pentathlon following the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and is set to feature in the modern pentathlon programme at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Cameron said that development makes JUAC particularly important for young Jamaicans whose athletic abilities may lend themselves to obstacle competition.

“This is why events such as JUAC matter. They help to identify talent, create exposure, build public interest, develop event-management capacity and inspire young athletes to see obstacle sport not simply as recreation or entertainment, but as a serious competitive discipline with a credible international and Olympic pathway,” said Cameron.

Under the modern pentathlon format, athletes compete across fencing, obstacle racing, swimming, shooting and running, with shooting and running combined in the Laser Run.

Cameron also highlighted the sport’s ability to bring together qualities already associated with Jamaica’s sporting culture, including speed, strength, endurance, courage and resilience.

He said the event has attracted growing support from corporate Jamaica, namely CB Group, GWM, Tru-Juice Farms, General Accident Insurance, Express Fitness, CIBC, ROK, CHG Group, AiTix, Locker Room Sports, the Automobile Association of Jamaica and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica among its partners.

Cameron also singled out TM Traders Ltd, operators of Port of Call Duty Free, for backing the initiative in its early stages, while expressing gratitude to Ian Adamson, former president of World Obstacle and current chair of the UIPM Obstacle Commission, for helping to open international doors.
He also credited co-lead Carole Beckford and GC Foster College for Sports and Physical Education for their contribution to bringing the concept to launch.

For Cameron, however, the event’s potential extends beyond the competition itself.
He said JUAC could become a significant addition to Jamaica’s sport tourism calendar by encouraging visitors to come not only to watch but to participate, explore the island and spend within the local economy.

“JUAC gives us the opportunity to invite the world to Jamaica—not just to watch, but to participate, compete, explore, and return whilst filling hotel rooms, visiting our attractions, and supporting local businesses,” Cameron said.

He also thanked the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport for their support, stressing that sport can contribute to youth development, employment, health, national identity and Jamaica’s international reputation.

As the November event approaches, Cameron is calling on athletes, businesses and young Jamaicans to embrace the new challenge.

“The Jamaica Ultimate Athlete Challenge is more than a race,” he noted. “It is a platform. It is a pathway. It is a celebration of athletic potential. It is a statement that Jamaica is ready to lead, compete and innovate in the global world of obstacle sport”.
