SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth – Denbigh High School created the first major upset of the ISSA Ben Francis Cup as they beat many time champions St Elizabeth Technical in their second round game played at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex on Saturday.

Denbigh, who had beaten Yallahs High in the first round, led 2-0 after 20 minutes and defended stoutly at the end to preserve a big win that saw them qualify for Wednesday’s Round of 16.

There was another upset after Old Harbour High came from a goal down to beat Rusea’s High 2-1 in a game between former champions.

Defending champions Clarendon College and Munro College, who had byes in the first round, also advanced with wins over May Day High and Frome Technical respectively while last season’s other finalist Cornwall College held off Knox College 4-1.

At Santa Cruz, Kenardo Smith sent Denbigh ahead when he scored from the penalty spot in the eighth minute and Markland Williams doubled the lead in the 20th minute.

Kimmarie Roach pulled a goal back for STETHS in the 57th minute and despite the former champions throwing everything in attack in the final 15 minutes, the Denbigh defense were able to keep them out.

Cornwall College were led by a brace from Carlondo Morris as they beat Knox College 4-1 in Montego Bay and will face Manchester High who blanked Titchfield High 8-0.
Christopher Allen gave Cornwall the lead in the third minute and Morris added a second with a towering header in the 12th minute as they led 2-0 at half time.

Morris lobbed the Knox goal keeper Zachary Chambers for the third goal in the 47th minute and Mekhi Foster fired a powerful volley from just outside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute to make it 4-0.

Michael Moses pulled one back from Knox in the 87th minute when he fired home from close range.

At Manchester High, Jevohntae Gordon scored four times, Nicolus Young got a double while Jahleel McKenzie and Samuel Smith both scored a goal each for the home team.

Clarendon College opened their defense with a 7-0 beating of May Day High; Munro College hammered Frome Technical 5-0 and Glenmuir High swamped Knockalva Technical 14-0 to book their places in the next round.
