KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has joined Jamaica and music lovers around the world in mourning Cleveland “Cleve” Laing, known to generations as Lieutenant Stitchie, who died in hospital yesterday, one day before his 61st birthday.

According to a release from the PNP, Opposition Spokesperson on Culture, Creative Industries and Information Nekeisha Burchell described Lieutenant Stitchie as one of Jamaica’s gifted and courageous voices.

“Jamaica has lost one of its most gifted and courageous voices,” Burchell said. “Lieutenant Stitchie helped shape dancehall in its formative years, carried our music to the world, and then showed us that a man can reinvent himself with grace and still hold the respect of all who knew him.”

Emerging from the vibrant sound system culture of Spanish Town in the early 1980s, Lieutenant Stitchie rose to prominence with his 1986 hit Wear Yuh Size, followed by Natty Dread. His 1988 recording deal with Atlantic Records carried his talent to international audiences.

After becoming a born-again Christian in 1997, he devoted himself to ministry and built a career in gospel reggae, touching lives beyond the dance floor.

“His journey from the dancehall to the pulpit is a testament to faith, discipline and purpose,” Burchell said. “His music will continue to inspire young creatives who believe their talent can serve a higher calling.”

The PNP extended condolences to his wife, Sophia Laing, his family and loved ones, as well as members of the dancehall and gospel fraternities who shared stages, studios and sound systems with him.

“We pray his family finds comfort in knowing that his legacy is secure in the heart of the nation,” Burchell added.
