MANDEVILLE, Manchester—The Manchester Co-operative Credit Union Limited (MCCU) has taken a significant step towards becoming a national credit union following approval to accept the transfer of engagements (merger) with the Insurance & Employees Co-operative Credit Union (IECCU).

The landmark decision was made at MCCU’s Special General Meeting (SGM), held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Bloomfield Professional Centre in Mandeville.

The meeting brought together members to consider and vote on the Special Resolution for the proposed transfer of engagements of IECCU to MCCU.

Following presentations and discussions on the proposed transaction, the majority of the members present voted in favour of the resolution, signalling strong member support for the strategic move and MCCU’s vision for continued growth and expansion.

This merger is expected to increase member value, strengthen resilience and better position the credit union to navigate the evolving financial services environment.

The approval signals the beginning of a new chapter for one of Manchester’s established financial cooperatives as MCCU positions itself to expand its reach beyond its traditional Manchester base with expansion into key commercial centres, including Kingston and Montego Bay.

IECCU members will become part of MCCU and will be served under the combined credit union structure. The membership bond will be adjusted to accommodate IECCU membership and reflect a more national approach.

MCCU’s name will remain in the short term. A new name for the merged credit union will be determined within three years to reflect the new identity.

For MCCU members, the merger represents an opportunity to benefit from a larger and more diversified financial cooperative.

As MCCU grows, increased scale will create opportunities to invest in products, services, technology, delivery channels and member experiences. The expanded organisation will be positioned to explore greater access to financial services in additional locations, more convenient ways for members to access and manage their accounts, expanded loan and savings solutions, greater opportunities for partnerships and strategic alliances and stronger capacity to respond to changing financial needs.

The Manchester Co-operative Credit Union Limited celebrated its 75th anniversary and now serves more than 56,000 members, with an asset base exceeding $10 billion at the end of the 2025 financial year.

The successful approval comes during this significant anniversary year, as MCCU reflects on its journey while preparing for the future.

A major component of the credit union’s growth strategy will be its continued investment in digital transformation and financial technology.
