Usain Bolt, other foundations endorse Junior Cup football tournament

THE Youth Football League (YFL) will begin its fifth season with the 2026 Junior Cup, strengthened by the continued support of the Usain Bolt Foundation and the addition of the YO Sports and Arts Foundation.

The Usain Bolt Foundation is not new to the YFL family, having supported the league’s initiatives for several years. Through the Foundation’s partnership with Puma, YFL has also received football gear and equipment to support participating teams, prizes and match-day execution.

“We are extremely proud to continue our relationship with the Usain Bolt Foundation and to welcome the YO Sports and Arts Foundation,” said Paula Pinnock, Managing Director of the Youth Football League. “Having foundations that understand the importance of investing in young people represents a major victory for the YFL and the children we serve.”

Omar McFarlane of the YO Sports and Arts Foundation underscored the importance of investing in youth football.

“Grass-roots football is not only where talent is discovered — it’s where character is built. If we invest in our youth at the grassroots, we don’t just build better footballers, we build a better Jamaica.”

YFL’s work with charitable foundations reflects the league’s commitment to combining sporting development with education to help create more well-rounded young people.

In 2025, the Pocket Rocket Foundation partnered with YFL to provide a football scholarship to the Most Valuable Player of the Champions Cup. That initiative demonstrated how partnerships can extend beyond match-day competition to create meaningful opportunities for young student-athletes.

“Our focus is not only on developing better footballers,” Pinnock said. “We want to use sport alongside education to develop disciplined, confident and well-rounded individuals.

Working with foundations that share this vision allows us to create a greater and more lasting impact.”

The Junior Cup is to begin on Saturday, October 3, at William Knibb High School in Trelawny. It will continue at Ferdie Neita Park in St Catherine on October 10 before moving to the UWI Mona Bowl for the Kingston and St Andrew leg on October 17.

The Trelawny staging forms part of YFL’s commitment to making the Junior Cup more inclusive and accessible to schools across Western Jamaica.

Primary and preparatory schools from Trelawny, Hanover, St James and other western parishes are being invited to participate in the regional competition.

YFL has previously staged activities in Montego Bay and is now broadening its regional footprint by bringing the Junior Cup to Trelawny. The decision was also influenced by work undertaken in the parish by FYI Consultancy Group following the passage of Hurricane Melissa in 2025.

During a major Christmas relief initiative in Trelawny, FYI staged a small Junior Cup football activation for children. The response helped inspire the decision to bring a full regional leg of the competition to the parish.

“Our aim is to ensure that the Junior Cup reaches more children and becomes increasingly inclusive,” Pinnock explained. “By staging the tournament in different locations, we can create opportunities for schools that may not always be able to travel to Kingston or Montego Bay.”

Western Jamaica has a proud sporting tradition and has produced some of the country’s most respected sporting figures, including eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt and former Reggae Boyz player and national coach Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore.

“Usain Bolt is a powerful example of what can emerge when talent is supported from an early age,” Pinnock said. “While communities continue rebuilding, we must not lose sight of the role sport can play in developing discipline, confidence, resilience and ambition among our young people.”

The 2026 Junior Cup will also be staged in St Catherine for the first time, providing greater access for schools and young players in Portmore, Spanish Town and surrounding communities.

YFL is encouraging primary and preparatory schools to participate in the regional competition most convenient for them. Each tournament will provide players with the opportunity to compete in a professionally organised environment built around the league’s core values of Respect, Development and Fair Play.

Since its launch in 2022, YFL tournaments have welcomed more than 50 different school teams from across Jamaica.

The 2026 Junior Cup is being supported by the Usain Bolt Foundation, YO Sports and Arts Foundation, Kemtek, JN Group, ICWI, Pure Water, Concept One Marketing, Funland Jamaica and FYI Consultancy Group, with additional support from Puma through the Usain Bolt Foundation.

YFL particularly recognised ICWI and JN Group for supporting the league from its early years and continuing to invest in the development of young players.

“None of this would be possible without our sponsors and partners,” Pinnock said. “Their support helps us provide venues, referees, medals, trophies, equipment, prizes and a quality match-day experience for the children.”

The league is continuing its call for additional corporate sponsors, individual donors and organisations willing to sponsor the registration of school teams. A contribution of $20,000 can provide up to 14 young players with the opportunity to represent their school and community.

YFL is also encouraging parents, principals and coaches to recognise the long-term value of structured youth competition.

“This is about more than one day of football,” Pinnock added. “It is about creating positive experiences, identifying talent, building confidence and helping student-athletes understand that sporting and academic development can work together.”
