JN Money bridges the financial gap for Canadian farm workers

JN Money bridges the financial gap for Canadian farm workers

For seasonal farmworkers in Canada, the start of the agricultural season can bring a financial squeeze. While these farm workers settle into work and await their regular earnings, responsibilities at home in Jamaica continue, creating a need for timely access to funds.

JN Money is helping to bridge this gap through a short-term loan facility designed specifically for seasonal farm workers, providing access to financing when their earnings may not yet have picked up. The facility is helping workers to meet urgent financial commitments in Jamaica while they continue to adjust to the demands of the farming season in Canada.

For Linton Pearson, who has returned to Canada annually for the past 26 years as part of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Programme, the facility has provided valuable support during this critical period.

A resident of Portmore, St Catherine, Pearson works from April to November on a vegetable farm in Simcoe, alongside nearly 60 other workers — approximately 45 of whom are Jamaicans. On the more-than 100-acre farm, he cultivates a variety of vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, radishes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, and Chinese melons. Crops are planted at different times, allowing harvesting to continue throughout the season.

The work is demanding, but Pearson is grateful for the opportunity because he has seen how the programme has helped him and others to achieve goals that may otherwise have remained out of reach.

“It’s very helpful. You can accomplish what you like to do in the future. It is a wonderful thing,” said Pearson.

However, the nature of seasonal farm work means that income is not always consistent.

Pearson pointed out that there are times when he works seven days a week, while at other times the workload is reduced.

It is against this backdrop of variable work and the slower start to the farming season that he said the JN Money loan facility has proved particularly beneficial.

Pearson has accessed the facility four times, using it to help manage immediate financial needs before his regular earnings become available.

“It’s a good thing,” he related, pointing out the value of having access to funds when he needs them.

Pearson emphasised the usefulness of the facility during the early part of the season, when workers may have arrived in Canada but have not yet received sufficient earnings.

“When we just came up, [money was] not available. So, it comes in handy at that time,” he shared.

Claude Thompson, regional manager, JN Money, said the facility was developed in response to the financial realities faced by seasonal farm workers, many of whom continue to support their families and meet financial obligations in Jamaica while working in Canada.

“The beginning of the farming season is often challenging for them as they are settling into work in Canada, while at the same time they have important financial commitments to meet back home,” Thompson explained.

“This loan facility provides that timely bridge when funds may be limited, giving workers greater flexibility to address urgent needs while they wait for their salary,” added Thompson.

For Pearson, the facility complements a long-standing relationship with JN Money. He has used the remittance service for years to send money to Jamaica, helping him maintain a financial connection with his family while working thousands of kilometres away.

His commitment to supporting his family has been a major motivation throughout his 26 years in the farm work programme. Pearson has been married for 30 years and has five children, including two stepchildren. Although his children are now adults, he said the programme has helped him provide for his family’s needs and improve their quality of life.

His earnings from the programme have also enabled him to build his house and make subsequent additions and improvements over the years.

Pearson’s journey into the programme began with an invitation from his sister’s boss, who was associated with the programme. He immediately made himself available for the opportunity, which has since become an important part of his working life.

He acknowledges, however, that success in the programme requires commitment and a willingness to work hard.

“It’s not an easy work. You have to have manners and discipline, because that’s what the boss is looking for. Not everyone is willing to work as hard as is required and find it hard to keep up, but with a mind to work and teamwork effort, we can all achieve,” he said.

While his work in Canada has helped him improve the quality of life for himself and his family, Pearson also relies on another skill he has honed over the years, cabinet-making and furniture construction, to earn an income when he returns to Jamaica.

Now in its 60th year, the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Programme has provided employment opportunities for thousands of Jamaicans and other nationals, while helping to supply much-needed labour to Canada’s agricultural sector.
