TALL TASK!
Reggae Boyz look to rebound in tricky El Salvador test
JAMAICA will be looking to get back on track in the Concacaf Nations League when they face hosts El Salvador in San Salvador tonight at 9:00 pm Jamaica time.
The Reggae Boyz started their campaign with a 3-2 win against Guatemala at the National Stadium in Kingston last Friday. But three days later, they lost 1-0 to Honduras at the same venue.
Now, Jamaica face two away games in four days. After playing El Salvador, they travel to take on Honduras again on Monday.
Suriname lead Group B with six points from two games. Four teams — Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, and El Salvador — are tied on three points each, while Martinique sits at the bottom without a point.
Jamaica made five changes to their starting line-up against Honduras, but the team still struggled with energy levels.
Interim Head Coach Rudolph Speid says fatigue hurt the team early in that match.
“The people who started the last match, we repeated them,” Speid said in the press conference on Monday. “We were a bit lethargic, and that allowed Honduras to dominate the game in the first half, especially.”
The home loss puts extra pressure on the team as they head into two tough away matches.
“The loss to Honduras is a setback for us,” he said. “It means that we have to win our remaining games to qualify straight from this stage. So, it’s going to be tough, and we’re going away, which makes it even harder for us.”
Speid also mentioned defensive problems that need quick fixing before facing El Salvador.
“There’s a lot of things — almost everything that we need to improve on,” he said. “Our pressing wasn’t good against Honduras, but even when we dropped into a low block, Honduras still found ways through. Maybe we were just too wide apart, and we have to play much tighter.”
With games coming four days apart and travel involved, Speid hinted at making changes to keep the team fresh.
“We have a big squad, and it is possible that we might have to allow other players who have more energy to play,” he said. “We’ll have to rotate, and that’s something we’re going to look at.”
Tajay Grant, Jamone Lyle, Kyle Ming, and Ramone Howell have been added to boost the squad for this trip.
El Salvador also enter this match with three points from two games. They opened with a 3-1 win over Martinique before a 6-0 loss away to Guatemala on matchday two.
Playing at home at Estadio Cuscatlán, El Salvador will be eager to recover and take advantage of their home crowd.
Jamaica are undefeated in their last five meetings against El Salvador, with one win and four draws. The most recent match was a 1-1 draw in Kingston during World Cup qualifying in March 2022.
Winning away at Estadio Cuscatlán has proven difficult for the Boyz. Their last two trips to San Salvador in World Cup and Nations League qualifying ended in a 1-1 draw in November 2021 and a 2-0 loss in March 2019.
