Cavalier, Mount Pleasant renew JPL rivalry today

FORMER champions Cavalier FC and Mount Pleasant will renew their rivalry when they meet in a Jamaica Premier League first-round fixture at Sabina Park on Sunday.

The game, the second of a double-header, is scheduled for 7:30 pm. The two clubs, who have also won the Concacaf Caribbean Club Competition in the last three seasons, have developed one of the biggest rivalries in the local club competition, and form and records usually count for little when they meet.

Also on Sunday, surprise leaders Tru-Juice will host Tivoli Gardens at the Bramwell Clarke Complex in Linstead; joint leaders Montego Bay United will be at home at Jarrett Park to Dunbeholden FC; Racing United will look to rebound from last weekend’s loss when they take on Molynes United; while Treasure Beach and Humble Lion will go in search of their first win of the season when they meet at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

Cavalier have won their first two games and will put their perfect record on the line against a Mount Pleasant team that have won just once in their first three outings. Cavalier had to dig deep to beat Dunbeholden and Arnett Gardens in their opening two games, while Mount Pleasant will hope their poor start is behind them after losing their first two matches and conceding five goals.

Mount Pleasant scored two early goals on Sunday but the expected flood of goals did not materialise despite the presence of some of the island’s top strikers. New signings Trayvon Reid and Nicholas Nelson, who combined for 37 goals last season, both scored.

All five Cavalier goals have been scored by different players, but they will look to Christopher Ainsworth to lead the attack.

Tru-Juice have made a strong start to life in the JPL, scoring five goals without conceding, and are being led by Daniel Roberts. They will face a Tivoli Gardens team that are also off to a good start and remain unbeaten.

Veteran Leaunghn Williams has scored twice for Tivoli Gardens who have conceded just two goals so far.

Montego Bay United are back at home after a hard-fought win against Racing United and will hope to extend their winning run against Dunbeholden to five straight games.

Jourdain Fletcher, who scored 12 goals in the abbreviated 2025-26 season, got off the mark last weekend with the winning goal against Racing United and will be looking for more goals, along with Dwight Merrick and Deonjay Brown.

Dunbeholden have managed just one goal so far, losing all three games, and are at the foot of the points table along with Humble Lion.

Racing United will hope to shake off last weekend’s setback when they take on Molynes United who have lost their last two games by a combined 3-1 scoreline after beating Treasure Beach on the opening weekend.

Racing will be without Tajay Grant for the second-straight game as he is on national duty with the Reggae Boyz in Central America, while Nickyle Ellis will be expected to lead the attack.

Humble Lion have had a difficult return to the JPL after relegation at the end of the 2024-25 season but will hope to take at least a point.

Treasure Beach will be at home and, after solid performances in all three games so far, will be hoping to get their first victory of the season.
