Caribbean sustainability bond launches with JMMB Securities as lead arranger and broker

JMMB Securities Limited, part of the JMMB Group, on Tuesday joined regional partners in officially launching the Caribbean Sustainability Bond, a firstof- its-kind regional investment opportunity seeking to mobilise up to US$250 million for climate resilience, sustainable development and economic transformation across the Caribbean.

The bond will be issued by Caribbean Sustainability Investments Limited (CSIL), with the Caricom Development Fund (CDF) serving as Project Sponsor and JMMB Securities Limited acting as Lead Arranger and Broker. Funds raised through the bond are expected to support projects aligned with sustainability and development priorities across the region, including climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy, sustainable water and wastewater management, environmental protection and other initiatives that contribute to longterm economic and social development.

The Caribbean is among the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions and continues to face significant financing gaps in the investments needed to support resilience, sustainability and long-term economic development. The Caribbean Sustainability Bond seeks to help address that challenge by creating a pathway for capital to flow into projects that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits across the region.

The bond was officially launched at the Caribbean Investment Forum (CIF) in Barbados and featured a high-level panel discussion titled “Investing in Caribbean Resilience: Introducing the Caribbean Sustainability Bond”, followed by an official launch ceremony and networking reception.

Karl Townsend (right), Chief Country Officer, Group Capital Markets Unit, JMMB Group Jamaica; Meggie Eloy, Global Technical Assistance Lead, Climate Bonds Initiative; and Rodinald Soomer, Chief Executive Officer of the Caricom Development Fund, deliver a captivating presentation during the panel discussion, “Investing in Caribbean Resilience: Introducing the Caribbean Sustainability Bond”, at the Caribbean Investment Forum (CIF) in Barbados. The discussion highlighted the Caribbean Sustainability Bond as a new regional investment opportunity designed to mobilise capital for climate resilience, sustainable development and long-term economic growth across the Caribbean.

Distinguished speakers included Rodinald Soomer, Chief Executive Officer, Caricom Development Fund; Karl Townsend, Chief Country Officer, Group Capital Markets Unit, JMMB Group Jamaica; and Meggie Eloy, Global Technical Assistance Lead, Climate Bonds Initiative.

The discussion explored the growing importance of climate finance in unlocking opportunities for regional development and examined ways to mobilise private capital to support sustainable growth and resilience across Caricom Member States.

“For the first time in the region’s history we are launching a bond designed specifically to mobilise capital for growth and resilience – two pillars that will define the Caribbean’s future. Growth, because our economies must expand in ways that create jobs, foster innovation and open new markets. Resilience, because we must be better prepared to decisively meet the climate, economic and social challenges posed by our present realities,” said Rodinald Soomer, Chief Executive Officer of the Caricom Development Fund.

The initiative is designed to bring together investors, development partners and project sponsors around a shared vision for the Caribbean, creating a platform capable of financing projects that support growth, resilience and longterm sustainability.

“ The Caribbean Sustainability Bond creates a platform that brings together eligible projects under a single regional financing framework, presenting investors with a compelling Caribbean investment opportunity. Instead of fragmentation, we create scale, unlocking greater access to capital for projects that strengthen resilience, sustainability and long-term economic growth across the region,” said Karl Townsend, Chief Country Officer, Group Capital Markets Unit, JMMB Group Jamaica.

The regional financing framework is designed to aggregate eligible projects and connect them with a broader pool of local, regional and international investors seeking opportunities that deliver both financial returns and measurable development impact.

“Climate finance is not about the label. It is about what the money does. The Caribbean Sustainability Bond provides an opportunity to direct capital towards investments that strengthen resilience, support sustainable development and help build a more climate-ready Caribbean,” said Meggie Eloy, Global Technical Assistance Lead, Climate Bonds Initiative.

The Climate Bonds Initiative provided technical assistance in the development of the bond framework, helping to ensure alignment with recognised international sustainability standards and best practices. Legal counsel for the transaction was provided by MH & Co. Attorneys-at-Law.

The launch comes at a pivotal moment for the region. Caribbean countries continue to face increasing pressure from climate-related events, infrastructure needs and development financing gaps. The bond is expected to advance projects that support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while helping to build a stronger, more resilient and more prosperous Caribbean.
