KFC Jamaica commits $700,000 in support of Port Antonio Marlin Tournament

KINGSTON, Jamaica — KFC Jamaica has committed approximately $700,000 in meals to support the 63rd staging of the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament, as organisers prepare to welcome 15 boats for this year’s competition.

The tournament, organised by the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association, was officially launched on Tuesday, October 6, at 100 Hope Road in Kingston.

This year’s staging marks a return to the tournament’s traditional October schedule after the 62nd edition, originally set for October 2025, was postponed due to Hurricane Melissa and subsequently held in January 2026.

KFC’s contribution will provide meals for participants in the 42nd annual Canoe Tournament and crews competing in the main marlin competition. The sponsorship will also cover catering for the opening day activities and Captain’s Briefing on October 14, as well as the closing awards ceremony on October 17.

Marketing Officer at KFC Jamaica, Kandine West, said the company’s continued involvement reflects its longstanding relationship with the sport and the fishing community.

“Each year, this event creates a special sense of excitement and togetherness around Port Antonio. For KFC, it also carries a personal meaning because of our longstanding connection to sport fishing. We are pleased to continue showing up in a meaningful way and supporting the people who help bring the tournament to life,” West said.

The company’s connection to the tournament dates back to the Myers family’s involvement in sport fishing.

That legacy is recognised through the Tony Myers Award, named in honour of KFC Jamaica co-founder Tony Myers, which is presented to the boat recording the heaviest total catch during the competition.

Meanwhile, the tournament’s launch also highlighted ongoing efforts to assist fishing communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.

A cheque valued at $2 million was presented to Food for the Poor Jamaica, representing funds raised from the previous tournament to support hurricane relief efforts for fisherfolk.

Approximately 100 fisherfolk from communities across Jamaica are expected to benefit from the initiative.

Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Food for the Poor Jamaica, Marsha Burrell-Rose, highlighted the organisation’s longstanding work with fishing villages and the importance of providing sustainable assistance to help affected fisherfolk rebuild their livelihoods.

Chairman of the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association, Maxim Rochester, said the continued backing of sponsors has been critical to the tournament’s longevity, particularly following the challenges caused by the hurricane.

“The continued support of our sponsors means a great deal, particularly after the challenges brought by Hurricane Melissa. That commitment has helped us return for our 63rd staging and allowed us to give back,” Rochester said.

“The $2 million directed towards Melissa relief reflects what this tournament is about beyond the competition, supporting the people and communities that have been part of its story for so many years.”

Fifteen boats are expected to participate in the main tournament, which will also continue to promote responsible sport fishing practices, including the safe release of marlin back into the sea.

Now in its 63rd year, the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament remains a major fixture on Portland’s sporting and tourism calendar, attracting anglers while supporting economic activity and community development in the parish.

Sponsors and organisers came together for the launch of the 63rd Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament.
