Lue-Yen claims three titles as Shuttle Showdown opens

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Stephen Lue-Yen stole the spotlight on the opening weekend of the 2026 Shuttle Showdown badminton tournament, capturing three titles in an impressive display as competition got underway across several divisions.

Lue-Yen dominated the Masters category, securing the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles crowns at the tournament, which runs from October 10 to 18.

He opened his title haul with a commanding 15–10, 15–8 victory over Joslyn Davis in the men’s singles final before joining forces with Johnny Huang to defeat Gavin Seeriram and Abdul Freckleton 15–12, 15–11 for the men’s doubles title.

Lue-Yen then completed his treble in the mixed doubles alongside Antoinette Ingleton, capping a successful opening weekend.

The tournament also produced several multiple-title winners across the Development, Beginners and junior divisions, with 25 of the 40 scheduled events decided during the opening phase.

Kieron Reid was among the standout performers, claiming two singles titles. He defeated Kavon Brown 15–11, 15–12 to win the Development men’s singles crown before adding the Under-17 boys’ singles title with a 15–12, 15–6 victory over Justin Dillon.

Aashna-Paris McGlashin also enjoyed double success, securing the Development women’s singles title with a 15–9, 15–9 win over Rolde-Ann Broderick. She followed that performance with victory in the Beginners women’s singles final, overcoming Shari Webb 15–13, 11–15, 15–4.

Rory Chung, meanwhile, captured the Beginners men’s singles title after defeating Dale Hewett 15–12, 15–12.

In the junior categories, Ella Belle Palmer emerged as another leading performer, collecting three titles in the Under-15 division.

Palmer defeated Aaqilah Akuri 18–16, 15–10 in the girls’ singles final before partnering Leeya Dileep to secure the girls’ doubles crown with a convincing 15–2, 15–10 victory over Kiana Rhodes and Zuri Anderson.

She completed her treble alongside Ethan Grant in the Under-15 mixed doubles competition, which was contested in a round-robin format.

Abigail Harvey also impressed, capturing both the Under-17 and Under-19 girls’ singles titles. Harvey first defeated Sue-Ann Ogle 15–12, 15–9 in the Under-17 final before overcoming Ruthann Wagdle 15–11, 15–8 to secure the Under-19 crown.

In one of the weekend’s closest encounters, Timothy Loffler battled past Jamarie Thompson in a thrilling three-game contest to claim the Under-19 boys’ singles title. After dropping the opening game 12–15, Loffler fought back to take the next two 16–14, 17–15.

Elsewhere, Jillian Yap captured the Under-11 girls’ singles title with a 20–18, 15–6 victory over Wynter Zhang, while Akuri secured the Under-13 girls’ singles crown after defeating Yap 15–6, 15–6.

The doubles competitions also produced several winners, with Shakeem O’Gilvie and Matthew Robinson claiming the Development men’s doubles title, while Pia-Kai Spaulding and Kristian Samott emerged victorious in the Development women’s doubles.

Kavon Brown and Amarissa Chambers captured the Development mixed doubles crown, while Joseph Graham and Brown secured the Under-17 boys’ doubles title.

In the special categories, Malik Brown and Justin Dillon won the Coach and Player mixed doubles competition, while Arty Grant and Ethan Grant claimed the Parent and Child mixed doubles title.

With 25 titles already decided, attention now turns to the remaining 15 events in the A, B and C categories as the 2026 Shuttle Showdown continues towards its October 18 conclusion.
