Girlz hunt back-to-back wins against Mexico
HEAD Coach Hubert Busby says his senior Reggae Girlz are in high spirits and injury-free as they look to complete a double over Mexico in the second friendly international tonight in Querétaro at 8:00 pm Jamaica time.
Jamaica outlasted the hosts 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller in the first encounter at the Estadio Victoria in Aguascalientes on Friday. Jody Brown opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Captain Khadija Shaw doubled the lead five minutes later, Deneisha Blackwood got Jamaica’s third from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, and Solai Washington got the fourth in the 90th minute.
Mexico responded through Lizbeth Jacqueline Ovalle (29th), Captain Rebeca Bernal (45th), and Veronica Charlyn Corral (90+5).
Busby confirmed preparations have gone smoothly since arriving in Querétaro.
“Preparation for the match has gone well. We’ve arrived in Querétaro on Saturday afternoon from Aguascalientes. We’ve had two days of training and so far it’s been good. No real injuries to report, spirits are high, naturally, and we’re looking forward to the match tomorrow (today),” Busby said.
The veteran coach praised his team’s character after beating one of Concacaf’s benchmarks in front of 25,000 fans.
“I think the girls really enjoyed it and thrived on it.
But, you know, obviously the next match is what’s important.
But any time that you can come down and beat a Mexican team, considering all the resources they have, all the preparation, they’ve done really well in growing their women’s league domestically here.
“And it shows not just with their senior team, but their youth teams and U-23 teams.
So they are obviously one of the benchmarks of Concacaf.
And so, yeah, it was a great result. It’s a game now that’s behind us and we obviously focus on [Tuesday’s] match,” Busby stated.
Looking beyond tonight, Busby says the staff will review the series before shifting full focus to the Women’s Championship and the November 27 clash against Costa Rica.
“The minute this match or this series is completed, we will reconvene as a staff, more than likely early next week, to obviously give a little bit of time for the staff to decompress and reflect and you know, review some film and, and look at obviously continuing to review the players as they head back into their environments,” Busby noted.
“I think the next two or three weeks will have a really good indication in terms of where we’re heading personnel wise.
But overall, I think the group and the core group, which I’ve maintained for a while now of 30 to 40 plus players, if called upon, will be ready to compete on the 27th of November against Costa Rica.
“The first thing, we have to get through and make sure that we continue to work on our identity, our playing principles, work on some aspects of our game, which I thought we can improve on from last match.
That will be the focus as of tomorrow,” Busby explained.
“Once that is completed, we’ll look forward to the game in November and not just the game but obviously the W Championships as a whole so I am excited to see what the next six weeks brings for sure,” he added.
