Miller stepping out of Reynolds’ shadow with Walker Cup triumph

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Jermaine Miller is beginning to make his mark at Kingston College, stepping out of former head coach Vassell Reynolds’ shadow by guiding the school to the ISSA Walker Cup title in his first season in charge of the Under-19 team.

Miller, who was promoted from KC’s Under-16 programme, watched his team come from behind to beat Mona High 2-1 in Friday’s final at Stadium East, securing his first senior schoolboy football title and strengthening the Purples’ pursuit of an ambitious four-title haul.

Reynolds led KC to the 2024 Manning Cup crown, setting a high standard for the programme. But Miller’s Walker Cup success has given him an early opportunity to establish his own identity while building on the foundation left by his predecessor.

Miller was quick to thank the school’s leadership for allowing him to take charge of the senior team.

“I want to thank our principal and the management team for putting their trust in me to lead this Manning Cup team,” Miller told the Jamaica Observer.

“Having spent some time at the Under-16 level, I thought they would have recognised the quality of work that was being done down there. And I thought it was just the right time to elevate me,” he added.

The Walker Cup victory adds to KC’s early-season success in the Clarendon Elite Cup and Roper Cup, and has provided a significant confidence boost as they continue their Manning Cup campaign.

“This is a big booster for us from pre-season. You could see the quality in the team, the depth in the team and all of that. But coming out here tonight and winning the Walker Cup, I think it’s a major confidence booster for the entire coaching staff and the team,” Miller pointed out.

KC’s resilience has been particularly impressive, with the team recovering from a goal down against defending Manning Cup champions Excelsior in the semi-finals before producing another comeback against a quality Mona side in the final.

Miller credited the players’ familiarity with his tactical system and their ability to execute changes under pressure for helping KC turn difficult situations into victories.

“It’s a quality team and a bunch of players that have played in my system before, so they are familiar with tactical changes,” he explained.

“I thought in both games, tactically, we made some adjustments while we were down. Those adjustments, the boys were able to carry them out effectively, and I thought that was a major part in us coming back and winning both games.”

With the Walker Cup secured, KC’s attention now turns to St George’s College and the Manning Cup, with Miller insisting that his players must remain grounded despite the growing belief that they can win four titles.

“Most definitely, there is a self-belief within the group that, yes, we can win the quadruple,” he said. “But at this moment, we want to stay humble. We want to keep our feet on the ground and just focus on what is immediately in front of us.”

Miller said the team must quickly put the celebrations behind them and concentrate on the next assignment.

“The mentality is just to switch off from celebration as quickly as we can and just focus on the Manning Cup,” he said.

For Miller, the Walker Cup is an important first step in his senior coaching journey at KC. With a trophy already secured, he has begun to demonstrate that the school’s Under-19 team can continue to compete for major honours under his leadership — while giving himself the chance to build a legacy of his own.
