Larry McDonald’s journey

FOR nearly seven decades, the heartbeat of Jamaican music has echoed through the hands of one extraordinary musician: Lawrence “Larry” McDonald.

A master percussionist, cultural ambassador, and living legend, McDonald has devoted his life to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the rich rhythmic traditions of Jamaica with the world.

On Monday, October 19, 2026 his remarkable journey will receive national recognition as he is awarded the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in the field of Entertainment, acknowledging his tremendous contribution to Jamaica’s musical heritage and cultural identity.

For McDonald, whose hands have helped shape the sound of ska, rocksteady, reggae, jazz, and countless other musical traditions, the honour represents more than personal achievement. It is a celebration of Jamaican culture, its ancestral rhythms, and the generations of musicians who have carried those traditions across the globe.

Born on June 11, 1937, in Port Maria, St Mary, McDonald’s musical journey began long before he stepped onto an international stage.

Growing up immersed in Jamaica’s vibrant cultural traditions, he was deeply influenced by the powerful African-derived rhythms of Kumina, Burru, and Jonkannu. These traditions, rooted in the island’s history and ancestral heritage, became the foundation of his musical identity.

As Jamaican popular music evolved through the 1950s and 1960s, McDonald emerged as one of the percussionists helping to define its distinctive rhythmic character.

Working alongside pioneering musicians such as Carlos Malcolm, Count Ossie, and Toots and the Maytals, he brought the expressive power of traditional hand drumming into the developing sounds of ska, rocksteady, and reggae.

At a time when the drum kit, bass, and guitar were becoming central to Jamaican popular music, McDonald helped establish the conga as an equally compelling musical voice. His playing added depth, texture, and a connection to Jamaica’s African heritage.

After relocating to the United States in 1973, he became an influential presence in an international musical community, collaborating with some of the most celebrated names in reggae, jazz, blues, soul, and spoken-word performance.

His remarkable list of collaborators includes Bob Marley and the Wailers, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Taj Mahal, The Skatalites, and the groundbreaking poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron.

His association with Scott-Heron, spanning nearly three decades, was particularly significant. Together, they helped create music that combined rhythm, poetry, social consciousness, and powerful cultural commentary.

Whether performing before thousands or contributing the subtle rhythmic details that elevate a recording, McDonald has always approached percussion as something greater than accompaniment.

In 2009, after decades of lending his extraordinary talents to the music of others, McDonald released his first album as a leader, Drumquestra.

The album was both a musical achievement and a cultural statement.

Bringing together an exceptional gathering of Jamaican musicians and vocalists, including Sly Dunbar, Toots Hibbert, Mutabaruka, Bob Andy, Bongo Herman, and members of the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Drumquestra placed percussion at the centre of the musical conversation.

Rather than treating the drum as a supporting instrument, McDonald presented it as the foundation of an entire orchestra of rhythm.

The project celebrated Jamaica’s African musical inheritance while demonstrating the extraordinary possibilities of traditional percussion in contemporary music.

At 89 years old, he continues to embody the spirit of creativity, resilience, and cultural pride that has defined his life’s work.

Far from slowing down, McDonald remains an active and dynamic presence on the international music scene, continuing to tour and perform with The Skatalites, David Hillard and the rocksteady 7, The NYC Ska Orchestra and Subatomic Sound System.

Whether introducing new generations to the infectious rhythms of ska and reggae, or sharing the stage with musicians decades younger than himself, McDonald continues to demonstrate that great music knows no age limits.

In January 2026 he was selected to deliver the keynote address at the University of California, Santa Cruz’s 42nd annual Martin Luther King Jr Convocation, a recognition of his extraordinary artistic journey and his enduring connection to music, history, and social consciousness.

Although his name may not always have appeared in the brightest lights, his rhythms have been heard alongside some of the most important voices in modern music.

He belongs to that exceptional generation of Jamaican musicians whose artistry helped transform a small Caribbean island into one of the world’s most influential musical nations.
