Campion College student Alliana Freeman launches CPR initiative after bun-eating contest tragedy

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Inspired by a tragedy and determined to make a difference, Campion College sixth-form student Alliana Freeman has launched Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica, a community initiative equipping caregivers and other Jamaicans with essential lifesaving skills.

The initiative was inspired by the death of Kerron Powell, who reportedly choked during a bun-eating contest in Christiana, Manchester, in March 2026. The incident deeply affected Alliana and reinforced her belief that more people should have access to practical training to help them respond to emergencies.

Working with St John Ambulance Jamaica, Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica held its first two training cohorts in July and August 2026, providing 19 participants with free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid training.

The sessions covered fundamental first aid principles, emergency response procedures, and practical skills to help participants respond with greater confidence while awaiting professional medical assistance. The initiative places particular emphasis on caregivers, whose responsibilities include supporting the health and well-being of others.

“I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to save a life. An emergency can happen anywhere and at any time, and knowing what to do in those critical moments can make all the difference. Through Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica, I hope to empower caregivers and ordinary Jamaicans with skills that can help protect families and strengthen our communities,” said Alliana.

The initiative brings together her interests in medicine, community service, and youth leadership. As an aspiring healthcare professional, Alliana hopes to demonstrate that young people can take meaningful action to address needs in their communities.

Participants practised chest compressions on training mannequins during a hands-on CPR training session.

The first two cohorts were made possible through the support of sponsors and individuals committed to expanding access to lifesaving education.

Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica extends special thanks to Century Wrecking Services, Efficient Delivery Solutions Limited, Michael Waite, Dr Peter Charles, and other supporters whose contributions helped cover training costs, materials, and refreshments.

Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica is a youth-led community service initiative founded by Freeman, which provides access to CPR and basic first aid training, with an initial focus on caregivers. Through partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteer support, the initiative aims to strengthen community emergency preparedness across Jamaica.
