Celebrating Jamaicans who have earned national honours
Dear Editor,
As Jamaica celebrates the recipients of this year’s national honours, I wish to extend heartfelt congratulations to every individual recognised for outstanding service and contribution to our country.
These honours represent more than medals, titles, or public ceremonies; they are an important expression of national gratitude to those whose dedication, sacrifice, and achievements have helped to shape Jamaica.
From public service and education to health care, culture, sports, community development, and other areas of national life, the recipients remind us that nation-building is a collective undertaking. While some serve in prominent positions and enjoy public recognition, others work quietly in their communities, often for decades, without expecting applause or reward. Their recognition demonstrates that meaningful service takes many forms and that every contribution to Jamaica’s progress deserves appreciation.
National honours also provide an opportunity to reflect on the values we should celebrate as a people. Integrity, commitment, compassion, excellence, and a willingness to serve others are qualities that strengthen our institutions and communities. By recognising those who exemplify these values, we help establish standards for younger generations and encourage others to contribute positively to national development.
However, the significance of these awards must extend beyond the annual ceremony. Recognition should inspire us to examine how we can create an environment in which service and excellence are encouraged, supported, and rewarded throughout the year. It should also remind public institutions and private organisations of their responsibility to acknowledge deserving individuals, particularly those whose work may otherwise go unnoticed.
At the same time, the credibility of our national honours system depends on fairness, transparency, and the consistent application of established standards. Jamaicans must have confidence that these distinctions reflect genuine achievement and service rather than political connections, personal favour, or popularity.
To all this year’s recipients, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. Your achievements remind us that one person’s commitment can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many and contribute to the advancement of our nation.
