NWC seeks 51 per cent tariff increase
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Water Commission (NWC) has applied to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) for a 51 per cent tariff increase, a move that could affect its approximately 500,000 customers.
Acting NWC President Kevin Kerr told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday that the application was submitted to the OUR last Friday, adding that the regulator is expected to make an announcement shortly.
Kerr said the proposed increase is tied to an investment plan designed to secure funding for the company’s priority projects.
He warned that if the OUR does not approve the full 51 per cent increase, the NWC would have to revise its investment plan.
Kerr also noted that members of the public would have an opportunity to provide feedback through a consultation process before the OUR makes a determination on the application.
The NWC has argued that the increase is necessary to bring its revenues in line with its expenses. The commission last received a tariff increase in 2019.
NWC Chief Financial Officer Fabian Christie told the committee that the company’s revenue position had deteriorated over time, particularly in relation to customer payments.
He said the proposed increase was needed to keep pace with rising operating costs, including energy expenses.
