Ocho Rios secure daCosta round-of-16 spot
OCHO Rios High booked a spot in the round of 16 of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition for a third consecutive season after beating Morant Bay High 4-0 in their Group 4 game at Drax Hall on Monday.
The win took Ocho Rios to 10 points and second place behind qualifiers McGrath High, whom they will meet in the group decider on Wednesday.
Ocho Rios are among five schools to have secured places in the next round, joining Frome Technical, Lacovia High, Clarendon College and Manning’s School.
Three more automatic qualifying spots could be secured today, with Kemps Hill High, Denbigh High and Garvey Maceo competing for the two available places in Group 3, while Munro College are seeking to advance from Group 1.
Dario James scored twice as Ocho Rios recorded their third win of the round, moving ahead of Dinthill Technical in the race for second place.
Central High beat Yallahs High 5-0 in their Group 2 game to keep alive their slim hopes of finishing ahead of Glenmuir High. Glenmuir could lose their game on Wednesday and still finish ahead of Central on goal-difference.
Rusea’s High moved into sole possession of second place in Group 6 on seven points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Brown’s Town High at York Castle High.
Malik Headed gave Rusea’s the lead before Javier Henry equalised for Brown’s Town, who are now out of contention for an automatic qualifying spot.
In Group 3, Kemps Hill, last season’s semi-finalists, lead on 10 points and need only a draw against Denbigh to win the group. Denbigh, however, must win by a two-goal margin to move ahead of Kemps Hill, while Garvey Maceo will look to take advantage against an already eliminated Mile Gully High.
Munro College can secure second place in Group 1 with a point against Irwin High, who must win to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Frome Technical have already qualified and need only a draw to finish top of the group.
Munro beat Maggotty High 4-1 on Saturday to rebound from their loss to Frome. A point against Irwin would leave defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) needing one of the four best thirdplace spots. STETHS face Holmwood Technical, who forfeited their game against Irwin on Saturday.
