Wolmer’s, KT in play-off for Champions Cup spot after Excelsior ruling
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Wolmer’s Boys and Kingston Technical (KT) will face off for a place in the Champions Cup after the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) ruled that they must contest a play-off to determine Excelsior High’s replacement in the competition.
The decision follows Tuesday’s ruling by ISSA’s Disciplinary Committee, which found Excelsior guilty of using an ineligible player in breach of the association’s eligibility regulations.
Excelsior have been ordered to forfeit every game that the player participated and have also been placed on probation until August 31, 2028.
Of note, the guilty player was not named because he was involved in their Walker Cup triumphs over KT and then Wolmer’s, and as such the organisers saw it fit that both schools fight to replace Excelsior in the Champions Cup.
The disciplinary committee said Excelsior breached ISSA’s Eligibility Rule governing academic and attendance performance, as outlined on page 17 of the association’s Rules and Regulations Handbook.
Excelsior also forfeited six points in the Manning Cup after their victories over St Jago High School and Calabar High School were overturned. Each has been awarded 3-0 victories and three points from their respective matches against Excelsior.
ISSA has not yet announced the date and venue for the play-off.
The school’s probation will remain in effect until August 31, 2028, during which time it is expected to comply strictly with all academic, attendance and player eligibility requirements.
The ruling adds another twist to the schoolboy football season following actions taken against Jamaica College earlier.
