Ministry mourns Jamaican farm worker killed in Ontario, Canada

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has expressed condolences following the death of Rajay Baker, a Jamaican participant in the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP), who sustained fatal injuries during an altercation in Ontario, Canada.

According to information provided by Canadian law enforcement authorities, Baker was injured during an altercation involving another worker and was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by emergency responders.

The Norfolk County Police Service is investigating the incident as a homicide. The ministry said it would refrain from commenting further on the circumstances surrounding the death while the investigation remains active.

Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr expressed sadness at the loss and extended condolences to Baker’s family, friends and loved ones.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Mr Baker. This is a tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as they navigate this difficult period,” Charles Jr said.

He added that the ministry would continue working with the relevant Canadian authorities and provide the necessary support to the family.

The ministry said it had been advised that a post-mortem examination was expected to be conducted in the coming days.

The Jamaican Liaison Service in Canada remains in contact with the relevant authorities and is monitoring developments.

In the meantime, the ministry is reminding participants in the SAWP of the importance of responsible conduct, sound judgement and resolving disagreements peacefully. It said participants’ actions could affect their own safety, the well-being of others and the reputation of Jamaica’s overseas employment programmes.

The ministry also encouraged workers to seek assistance from their liaison officers when concerns or disputes arise. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Baker’s family and said further updates would be provided.
