Cornwall College, Glenmuir and Munro dominate daCosta Cup Round of 16 openers

ST ANN, Jamaica — Former champions Cornwall College, Glenmuir High and Munro College were big winners as the Round of 16 in the ISSA daCosta Cup got underway on Saturday.

Cornwall College delivered the biggest win of the round, thrashing Ocho Rios High 6-0 at Drax Hall, while Glenmuir High dismantled defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 5-0 in May Pen. Munro College also impressed with a commanding 4-1 victory over Manning’s School at the Llandilo Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, Lacovia High pulled off a surprise 2-1 victory over Clarendon College in Chapelton.

At Drax Hall, Carlondo Morris continued his impressive goalscoring form, netting his second consecutive hat-trick to spearhead Cornwall College’s dominant performance. Morris converted two penalties, while Mekhi Foster, Shakeem Gibson and Marcane Gooden also found the back of the net.

Glenmuir High were equally ruthless against STETHS, with Jonathan Tomlinson scoring twice in the second half to help the former champions secure a convincing victory after taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

Orel Miller opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Tomlinson extended the advantage with goals in the 49th and 71st minutes. Substitutes Ronaldo Campbell and Tristan Francis completed the rout, scoring in the 75th minute and the first minute of added time, respectively.

At Llandilo, Munro College produced an impressive attacking display to hand Manning’s School their first defeat of the competition, ending their unbeaten run following a perfect record in the previous round.

The match, which began more than 30 minutes behind schedule, saw Munro take an early lead through Akel Vespry, who connected with a low diving header at the far post in the ninth minute.

Nikosi Foncette doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 30th minute before Jaquan Mitchell struck from close range just two minutes later to put Munro firmly in control.

Manning’s School pulled a goal back through Jarvis Meylor shortly before half-time, but former Manning’s player Kajaye Williams sealed the victory for Munro, squeezing the ball between goalkeeper Michael Gibbon and the near post.

Elsewhere, Lacovia High came from behind to stun Clarendon College 2-1, moving level on points at the top of Zone 3 with Dinthill Technical, who secured a 2-0 victory over Denbigh High.

McGrath High also opened their Round of 16 campaign with a win, defeating Central High 2-0.
