Patra: Far from finished
Patra ...honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the organisers of the recently concluded Caribbean Music Awards.

Patra: Far from finished

... honoured by CMA Lifetime Achievement Award

Constantly busying herself with ideas of reinvention, Patra was deep in preparations for upcoming interviews when she first received word that she would be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the organisers of the Caribbean Music Awards (CMA).

In fact, the Queen of the Pack artiste didn’t open the message until days after it was first sent. Still, the delay did little to diminish the emotional impact of the gesture. The news stopped her in her tracks, causing her to reflect on the journey that had brought her to that moment.

“I got very emotional and it put me in a sense of realisation and meditation,” Patra recalled. “I looked back at where I used to be as an artiste and it was very humbling. To be acknowledged by the CMA, it was a beautiful experience for me. I could barely contain myself.”

For an artiste who has spent decades navigating the shifting currents of the music business, the honour represented more than another accolade to add to an already notable résumé. It was a moment to pause and acknowledge the work.

“Going there to pick up the award, healthy, and still being able to do something that I love, was a feeling I still can’t put into words,” she said. “The highlight was when I realised that I really did do a lot to receive this acknowledgement and the moment allowed me to go back and honour that journey.”

Sometimes, she admits, artistes become so consumed with the next show, the next song, and the next move that they fail to fully appreciate what they have already accomplished.

“Sometimes as artistes, we know what we’ve done, the work we’ve put in but sometimes, the reflection really drives that home,” she said.

For Patra, that reflection is particularly powerful because her story is not simply one of success. It is also one of endurance. The little girl from the country who entered contests from school stages to major competitions already had an instinct for performance. But talent alone, she soon learned, would not be enough.

Having entered an industry in which men significantly outnumbered women, Patra was prepared to face anything thrown her way, including pushback. What she experienced, however, was an environment that allowed her to thrive.

“When I started out there were far more males in the industry than there were females. But the way they treated me when I got into the business was remarkable,” she said. “I always wanted to be a superstar and take my country to the world, and they really facilitated my growth. It made me excited getting into this business and I knew it was meant to be,” she told the Jamaica Observer.

That sense of purpose steered her career. Understanding from very early in her journey that surviving in music required more than knowing how to command a stage, the fiery deejay made a deliberate effort to learn the business, including that the often unseen army of people are responsible for bringing music to audiences.

“I made sure to educate myself on the business, and through that process I learnt to care for and appreciate the works of those behind the scenes,” she said.

That education, coupled with guidance from people who genuinely cared about her development, became part of the foundation on which she built her career. And the lessons continued even when she took a hiatus from the active music scene.

Now, Patra says she is ready for a resurgence marked by renewed energy and a different sense of creative possibility.

“I took a break and now I’m ready to get back out there with a new distribution deal through J House and Sony Orchard,” she said. “People haven’t seen anything yet. Patra is warming up, because there are a lot of good things going on.”

The next chapter is already taking shape, with Patra planning to release two albums in the first quarter of 2027, each exploring a different musical direction. One will deliver what she calls her personal “Patra vibes”, while the other will venture into house music.

The sounds may differ, but she insists the woman at the centre of both projects will remain unmistakably Patra.

“It’s going to be two different vibes, but it will still represent me; my image, my sensuality, my attitude, everything,” she said. The projects will also be message-driven and designed to make people feel good, reflecting an artiste who appears increasingly comfortable with the freedom to explore rather than remain confined by the expectations attached to her past.

“I am happy that with these two projects. I get to present myself to the world in the way I see myself with a sense of freedom. Now, I can do more than one genre of music,” she said, teasing that there will also be surprises on both projects.

In the meantime, she is giving fans a taste of the direction ahead with her latest singles, Me So Sexy and No Threat. The latter, she explained, is about reclaiming her individuality while acknowledging those who came before her, while Me So Sexy serves as the single from the J House Vol 1 project. Its accompanying video is also on the way.

There are performances ahead as well, including an appearance on the Rock The Bells Cruise, keeping Patra firmly connected to the live stage that helped establish her reputation in the first place.
