Probox driver turns himself in after fatal St Mary hit-and-run
ST MARY, Jamaica — A 36-year-old taxi operator has surrendered to the police following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a jogger along the Enfield main road in St Mary on Sunday.
The driver, who allegedly struck and killed 56-year-old Deveral Kirkland, turned himself in on Sunday afternoon in the company of his attorney, hours after police launched a search for the motorist and the vehicle involved.
Police have since seized the Toyota Probox believed to have been involved in the incident.
Investigators also confirmed that the vehicle is silver, correcting an earlier description of it as grey, which they attributed to poor visibility at the time of the incident.
The taxi operator remains in police custody as investigators continue their probe and consider possible charges.
Reports indicate that about 6:00 am on Sunday, November 1, Kirkland was jogging along the Enfield main road as part of his regular morning routine when he was hit by a motor vehicle. The driver reportedly fled the scene without stopping.
Kirkland was rushed to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
