Tensions flare as Phillips, McKenzie clash in Parliament
KINGSTON, Jamaica — An altercation occurred in the House of Representatives involving Manchester North West Member of Parliament Mikael Phillips and Kingston Western Member of Parliament Desmond McKenzie on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded during a heated exchange as House Speaker Juliet Holness was leaving the chamber.
Phillips had directed strong criticism at the Speaker, prompting McKenzie to intervene and urge him to remain respectful. The exchange soon escalated into a verbal confrontation, drawing the attention of several parliamentarians.
Government MPs, including Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton and State Minister Zavia Mayne, stepped in to restrain Phillips and prevent the confrontation from becoming physical.
Members of the Opposition, including People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding, were also seen amid the commotion as efforts were made to calm the situation.
