Trend Alert: Fringe

Fringe is bringing a little swing to wedding designs for 2027! From oversized lampshades to delicately trimmed menus, this familiar decorative finish is adding texture, movement and vintage charm to celebrations.

Some may remember it from a lampshade in their grandmother’s sitting room. Today, that nostalgic detail feels fresh when paired with contemporary furniture, thoughtful lighting and a considered colour palette. Cream and champagne offer softness, burgundy and chocolate bring richness, while metallic strands add sparkle.

The beauty of fringe is its versatility. It can make a statement overhead or appear as a subtle finishing touch at each place setting.

Suspended above dining tables, fringed lampshades create an intimate supper-club atmosphere. Over the dance floor, tiered installations introduce drama, especially when lighting catches the strands. Scalloped frames, curved edges and varying lengths give these pieces shape and dimension.

Smaller table lamps offer a gentler approach. Nestled among flowers and glassware, a fringed shade brings warmth to a tablescape. In lounge areas, these lamps help create the welcoming feeling of a beautifully furnished living room.

Bars and tables provide another canvas. A narrow trim can finish a linen elegantly, while long, layered fringe can transform the front of a cocktail bar or dessert station. Following the contours of a curved counter makes the treatment particularly striking.

For couples drawn to this look, one feature may be enough. A fringed bar can hold its own alongside simple dining linens and restrained floral arrangements.

Stationery offers an easy way to introduce the detail on a smaller scale. A menu edged with silky strands becomes part of the table styling, while a fringed invitation gives guests an early hint of the celebration’s aesthetic. Keep the lettering clear and the trim neatly finished so the design remains practical.

Even decorative vessels can join in. A cylinder wrapped in fine fringe adds interest to a single stem, offering an alternative to an elaborate centrepiece.

The fashion connection is equally playful. A fringed reception dress, cape or beaded handbag brings the same sense of movement to the bride’s look. A dress with a swinging hem feels especially suited to an evening of dancing, without needing to match the décor.

For an outdoor Jamaican wedding, consider how the material will behave in the breeze. Lightweight strands can move beautifully, but installations need secure support and enough clearance above guests. Table trims should stay clear of chairs, walkways, food and open flames.

As a designer, my advice is to give fringe a clear role. Choose a focal point and repeat the detail sparingly. If the ceiling is elaborate, allow the tables to be quieter; if the menus carry the texture, they may need little embellishment around them.

Fringe works best when its colour, length and finish belong naturally within the celebration. Whether you choose a dramatic installation or a delicate border, a little movement can leave a lasting impression.
