Legacy Isle to bounce back in Temperence Oaks feature
LEGACY Isle (United States) will be out to prove his Diamond Mile flop was just a blip when he lines up as the horse to beat in this afternoon’s third running of the $1.75-million Temperence Oaks Trophy at Caymanas Park.
The six-year-old son of Shackleford – Queenameina headlines the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance test for three-year-olds and upward over 6 1/2 furlongs (1,300m), the feature on a 10-race card. The day will also be celebrating the racing industry’s Racehorse Aftercare initiative, a transition of the local thoroughbreds to happy and healthy post-racing careers.
Legacy Isle’s disappointing last time out in the Diamond Mile, finishing well down the track in the one-mile (1,600m) event on July 25. But punters would be wise to forget that run. Before that, he smashed the 7-furlong (1,400m) track record in a blistering 1:22.3 on June 6. If he returns anywhere near that form over this slightly shorter trip, this race is his to lose.
The Rohan Crichton trainee has been training pretty well coming into this race, having gone 48.4 for 4 furlongs (800m) on November 2. That gallop alone says that he is ready.
The contest is positioned as the seventh event with a post time of 3:10 pm. First race is at 11:15 am.
His main danger is the Anthony Nunes-trained Nautical Star (United States). The six-year-old by Dixie Chatter – Kiss Me Chocolate closed from far back to finish a neck second to Dothraki in the Port Royal Sprint over five furlongs (1,000m) on October 19.
That was a sharp effort over a trip far too short for him. The extra distance here is right up his alley, and he should be flying late. If Legacy Isle is even slightly below his best, Nautical Star will be there to pick up the pieces.
Nautical Star’s stablemate Of A Revolution (United States) cannot be ignored either. The seven-year-old by MacLean’s Music – Hot Spell offspring also finished strongly for third, just 1 3/4 lengths behind Dothraki and Nautical Star over six furlongs last time. The extra half-furlong (100m) should suit him perfectly and he can be competitive again. He is the kind of honest, hard-knocking horse who always runs his race.
Behind the big three, it gets harder to make a case. Linguist, the four-year-old filly by Aveenu Malcainu, is talented in her own right, but this is a big step up in class. She will need to improve significantly to trouble these seasoned campaigners.
Rainsville, the seven-year-old grey by Casual Trick, looks outclassed on form. It’s hard to see him figuring in this company.
Funcaandun (United States), the five-year-old by Klimt, is also likely to be left behind when the real running starts.
