Silk Radio UK dedicates radiothon proceeds to hurricane-hit Dumfries Primary

The school’s roof needed attention, but so did the children beneath it. When Silk Radio UK assessed a hurricane-hit school in St James, it found pupils whose families were struggling to afford books, uniforms and the essentials of an education.

The station has directed all proceeds from its January 8, 2026 radiothon to Dumfries Primary School, choosing the institution after assessing where donations could make a meaningful difference following Hurricane Melissa.

Chief Executive Derrick “Big Dee” Thompson said the children’s immediate needs became a priority alongside concerns about the school’s damaged roof and facilities.

The station now promises a sustained partnership, with another fundraiser planned for early next year.

“We are formally committing to a second radiothon in early 2027, with the intention of supporting the school in whatever capacity is required,” Thompson said.

JoJo Mac, whose Silk Radio programme “Just Enough” examines social issues, said the scale of the need had determined the choice.

“In essence, Dumfries Primary School will remain our charity of choice until we are confident that the institution and its students are on stable, sustainable footing. We are going to help them until they get back on their feet,” JoJo Mac, who organised the radiothon, said. “We’re putting our hearts in it.”

Reggae artiste Vernal Sage, who also operates a technology and accounting firm, represented the station in Jamaica and arranged the handover of gifts and uniforms.

“The students, our liaison Ms Savannah and the school’s Principal Ms Ann Green have expressed profound appreciation for this vital infusion of goodwill,” Vernal Sage said.

Thompson credited Sage with identifying the school and ensuring that assistance reached its intended recipients.

“Bless up Sage, whose diligence and insight led us to this worthy institution and ensured the seamless transfer of funds,” he said.

Thanking listeners and donors, Thompson stressed that accountability would remain central to the effort.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to every listener, donor and supporter who contributed to this mission. Transparency remains central to our ethos; our donors can be assured that their generosity is handled with integrity and directed exactly where it is needed most,” he said.
