Nicole Mullen for Songwriters’ Showcase
February is Black History Month and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), in association with Life Productions presents a Gospel Songwriters’ Showcase tomorrow night at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Complex, in Kingston, starting at 8:00 pm.
The feature artiste for the night will be Nicole C Mullen, the first African-American ever to win the prestigious Dove Award for “Song of the Year”. She is a songwriter of great insight; who is blessed with one of Christian music’s most distinctive voices. Indeed, the scope of her remarkable appeal was recognised earlier this year, as she became the first woman in 14 years to receive Gospel Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year title. And when her worship song Redeemer was named Song of the Year 2001, she joined the ranks of Gloria Gaither and Michael W Smith as the only songwriters ever to have their compositions honoured with that distinction.
The line-up of artistes will also include Jamaican acts such as the soulful saxophonist Dean Frazer, Former JCDC Gospel Song winner George Gordon, and last year’s winner Nicole Robinson. These particular artistes were invited to participate in the showcase because of their expertise in composing quality lyrics. Other supporting acts will include Jody Ann Pantry and Noretta Lewis.
The Gospel Songwriters’ Showcase is being used to launch JCDC’s 2002 Original Gospel Song Contest. Life Productions and JCDC have decided to collaborate again this year to stage the Gospel Song Contest, which was a resounding success last year.
