Fashion’s darling, Carla Campbell
When Caribbean fashionweek ended it was Pulse model Carla Campbell who emerged as the muse of all muses. Carla’s very untypical model curves, her sensuality, knowledge of the clothes and most importantly, a knowledge of just how the designers wanted them worn, gained her much acclaim. All Woman caught up with this twenty-something-year-old after the show.
All Woman: What’s your height?
Carla: 5’11”
AW: Curves?
Carla: 36-26-36
AW: How long have you been modelling?
Carla: 1997 is when it all started — some three years full-time now. I entered the Pulse Jamaica Fashion model competition in 1997 and placed in the top 8. I was part of a Pulse team to New York and was signed to IMG. From there I went to Karin.
AW: Last photo shoot?
Carla: MTV Fashionably loud to be aired on November 28 and I’m currently in next month’s issue of Men’s Health. I’m also in the Beenie Man and Janet Jackson video.
AW: What’s in your make-up bag?
Carla: Tons of eyeliner and lip gloss
AW: Designers of choice?
Carla: I love casual clothes. I’m basically a jeans and t-shirt person. So my favourite sportswear labels are “Rocawear” and “Enyce”.
AW: Perfume/Cologne?
Carla: Amarigee de Givenchy
AW: What does Carla do when she’s not modelling?
Carla: I am a graduate of Merl Grove High School and The University of Technology. At UTECH, I completed a diploma in Office Administration and Technology. Since I plan to open my own business one of these days I’m currently enrolled at Brooklyn College where I’m studying Business Management. In between modelling, and studying I love to do creative dancing.
AW: How do you keep that fab body in shape?
Carla: (Much chuckle…) I’ve never been to the gym. It’s in the genes.
AW: What’s your shoe size?
Carla: 10.
AW: Dress size?
Carla : Between four and six.
AW: Tell us about your mane care
Carla: Low maintenance……I do wear extensions. My hair is usually in a ponytail.
AW: Skin care?
Carla: I swear by Basis soap and I use L’oreal moisturiser.
AW: Make-up?
Carla: Black Opal foundation and MAC powder.
AW: Favourite meal?
Carla: Ackee and saltfish and brown stew chicken.
AW: What qualities do you most admire in a male?
Carla: Firstly he has to be very tall, intelligent, charming, confident and have lots of personality.
AW: What advice would you give to model aspirants?
Carla: Fashion is all about hard work and perserverance it’s not all glitter. For black women it’s twice as hard. Success is not immediate (not for everyone). For example, I started modelling at the same time as Alec Wek. For her success was immediate.
AW: How does Carla see herself five years from now?
Carla: I want to open a business. Not too certain in what. Modelling would not be full time.
AW: So what’s next for Carla as she heads back to New York?
Carla: My eyes are on Victoria Secret. I really want to become part of the campaign.
AW: Continued success Carla
Our hope is that Carla Campbell will take over from Tyra Banks…
