I got engaged while already married
IF you have ever been in love, or even fancied yourself in love, you would have at some point done something questionable, especially if your affections weren’t returned.
In fact, some of those things could very well border on the illegal, if you think about it.
Below readers share some of the stories that now, thinking back, could have landed them before a magistrate.
Ogilvie G, 47:
I got engaged while already married. I was married but I met this girl who I really had the hots for. I knew if I told her I was married she would not have given me the time of day. So I said nothing. She was a strict church woman and did not believe in sex before marriage. So I proposed to her and we got engaged. We even set a wedding date. Her family and friends loved me, but the fact is that I was already married and loved my wife. I had no intention of leaving her. After we got engaged I convinced my ‘fiancée’ that it was OK for us to have sex because we were already practically husband and wife. She did. About four months before the planned wedding date I told her I didn’t think things would work out between us. I was just a few months away from committing bigamy.
Norman L, 43:
Well, a couple of times I stole money from my boss’ safe to take a girl I like to a fancy restaurant.
Keneisha T, 32:
My boyfriend was married. I wanted him to leave his wife for me but he wouldn’t. She couldn’t have children, or so he said. So I figured if I got pregnant for him he would leave her for me. I was young and actually believed it at the time. One night I told him I was pregnant. He was so excited. I knew I actually wasn’t, so I planned with a cousin who was pregnant to urinate on the test and I showed him. After that I tried to actually get pregnant but it just wouldn’t happen. Almost two months later I told him I’d lost the baby.
Glen D, 39:
I married a woman from overseas to get papers so I could go up to be closer to my girlfriend. The woman I married knew that it was strictly business, because she was paid for doing it. She was a friend of my girlfriend. Obviously you know those things are illegal.
Chuck M, 33:
One day I ‘borrowed’ my cousin’s car without permission to drive from Spanish Town to Montego Bay to go look for girl who had just come in from overseas. It was much later that I realised that the all the car documents had expired.
Gem S, 37:
I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me, so I followed him one day to the woman’s house and threw a rock in his windshield. I know I could have been charged with destruction of property, but that was the least of my worries at the time.
