The ultimate betrayal
In Genesis 38, Onan was struck dead by Yahweh for failing to fulfil his duty to his dead brother’s widow Tamar, by marrying her and having offspring. Though this biblical requirement for succession of lineage is no longer law, or popular in most cultures, many people have still taken to having relations with the spouses of their family members for whatever reason. Just watch an episode of Maury in the morning and you’ll be horrified.
Imagine this: Your sister/brother calls you explaining that they have hit a hard patch in life, they are about to get kicked out of their place for not paying the rent, and they want to stay with you until they get back on their feet. You talk it over with you partner and he/she says it’s OK.
All seems well, everyone seems to be getting along. Then one day you get home early from work and walk into the house, only to see your partner and your sibling getting it on. How would you react?
Kimberly, 30:
Well, first of all my sister would be dead to me. I would disown her and I would become single immediately.
Audrey, 27:
Boy, I can’t answer that, but I know my temper would get the best of me.
Andy, 36:
I would just run them out — pack up both their things and throw them out on the road.
Conroy, 29:
I’m not a violent person, but I know I wouldn’t just sit back a watch.
Roxanne, 24:
I might be sorry after but I would just get a belt and beat them. I don’t see how I could respond in a civilised manner under those circumstances.
Octavia, 39:
That would be the end of everything. I would move out and just leave them. I wouldn’t want the man back and I would never speak to my sister again.
Jay, 22:
If my brother did that to me I honestly don’t know what I would do. It would be the heights of betrayal. I don’t think I could get over it.
Marla, 31:
My man and my sister, wow! If it was the man’s place and I was living with him, knowing I didn’t have anywhere else to live, I would have my sister move out and still stay with the man until I could do better. But I wouldn’t be 100 per cent faithful to him, not after what he did with my sister.
