I’m not hungry
Dear Donovan,
I’m not very hungry when I know it’s time to eat. I only eat when I’m starving. Is this normal? I’m 26, I weigh 165 pounds, and I’m 5 feet 4 inches tall.
It is a common practice and also a bad habit for many people to skip meals and only eat when they are very hungry. But it is better to eat four to five small meals throughout the day rather than eat one or two large meals.
Leaving the stomach empty for extended periods can lead to an increase in stomach acid which is known to produce peptic ulcers or make a condition worse. Stomach pains, bloating and excess flatulence are also some problems associated with keeping the stomach empty for too long.
In addition, eating only when you are hungry can cause you to overeat. Missing meals can lower your sugar levels. This usually causes a craving for high carbohydrates.
Low sugar levels also cause a ravenous appetite. Overall, the body needs a steady supply of sugar and other nutrients to function properly. As a matter of fact, the brain is thought by many experts to only use glucose as a source of energy. Therefore, when the stomach is left empty for an extended period, it can result in anything from mental confusion to fatigue.
Also, not eating on time can send the body into starvation mode. In this state, the metabolic rate will be reduced. Sometimes even after eating a large meal the metabolic rate does not go back up. It means that most of this large meal will be stored. Therefore, skipping meals can result in weight gain.
The continuous cycle of high and low glucose levels can lead to mood swings, depression and even diabetes. Also, when you skip meals, the body releases adrenaline and other hormones. Adrenaline helps the body to produce energy over time. It is a known fact that adrenaline is a hormone that the body produces when it is stressed. Excess production of adrenaline over time can lead to high blood pressure, depression and even anxiety. Hence, leaving your stomach empty for extended periods can be unhealthy. It is therefore important that you take every step to correct this habit as soon as possible. Good luck.
