Marriage isn’t for everyone
MARRIAGE, along with a great career, financial stability, and a family have been used by society to define people’s success. But for those like entertainer Nick Cannon, who is in the process of divorcing singer and actress Mariah Carey, marriage isn’t for everyone. Cannon has said that he doesn’t think that he would ever get married again because it doesn’t fit his lifestyle, neither does he believe in the institution anymore.
And Cannon is not the only person who thinks this way. Below a few readers share why they believe marriage just isn’t for them.
Kayla:
I was 19 when he asked me to marry him. I was young and he was stable, but I am free-spirited. I never thought that I had anything to lose because I stood to gain everything. My husband, from whom I am now separated, is wealthy. I tried hard for three years but I just didn’t want the family dinners, the children, or anything else that he wanted. I am everything that he isn’t and I don’t believe that I could ever change. Marriage makes me feel as though I am trapped in an elevator and I can only use the buttons and go to the places that the elevator will take me. The only thing I could feel from being in the institution was my soul dying. Never allow that to happen to you.
Gary:
I am selfish, I won’t lie. I am a big flirt, I like sex with people of different shapes, sizes and complexions. I love getting to know different people and I get bored easily. At one point I thought I was over it and I got married to the woman I thought that I was meant to be with, but I guess it was all just a phase. I am what I am and I had to tell my wife. No amount of help she tried to get me could make me control myself. Marriage is a sacred union, and no woman should have to put up with a kind of man like me.
Dianne:
I am career-driven, my job takes me all over the world, and to be honest, I am obsessed with it. Though I love to be in charge of my affairs, I love knowing where my money is. I love spending without having to consider others, and I also detest having to make compromises about my living space. When I got married I did it because my family was pressuring me to. My husband didn’t travel as much as I did and he wanted me to start thinking about a family. He also wanted pillow talk, and for me to cook and do other things that a wife does. But I am not a regular wife and I don’t do what regular wives do and it made him miserable. I love enjoying my own company and while I can probably maintain a relationship for a few months, I usually don’t go beyond six months. The constant arguing, negotiating, and making compromises is just not part of who I am. As expected, we didn’t last. I care about him, but I wish he was just a boyfriend or a friend with benefits, that way there would not have been many expectations.
Delroy:
After being married for three years I realised that all the compromises that were made in the relationship meant that my dreams got crushed. It meant that I had to give a little piece of me and it is something that I had been doing all my life. When I got married I hoped for a fresh start to do everything I always wanted to as my own man and with the support of my wife and hopefully children. I didn’t enjoy feeling that I was always living in the shadow of someone – my wife or my family. I was miserable and unhappy. I just felt like I was always giving in the marriage until one day I felt like I had nothing left. The only way I am getting married again is if they make marrying yourself legal.
