This is how we met

This is how we met

Kimberley Hibbert and Penda Honeyghan

ON a daily basis we may come across couples who leave us awestruck with how in love and happy they appear to be. It’s the season of love, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, a few couples shared with All Woman the funny, adorable and awkward ways they met and became an item.

Monique and Andre Lawrence:

When Monique and I met in 2004, she was a receptionist at NWC and I worked across the hall from her. In the mornings I would have manners and say good morning to her, and we became friends. What kind of kick-started my interest in her was one morning she called my extension and said, ‘Andre, there’s somebody here to see you’. It was April 1 — All Fool’s Day. I went around there and was there looking around and there was no one there. I laughed and never took it as someone being idle, I thought it was bold of her to pull that prank. That sort of sparked something, but I didn’t act on it. To cut a long story short, we would have these monthly socials and there was one that was held and to be honest, I never saw the bottom half of Monique before. I always saw the top half and she was and she still is an attractive woman, but I hadn’t yet seen her thighs or her legs. At that particular social I saw her in jeans for the first time and I said wow, and some of my brethren were talking and saying, ‘No man, Monique look good’. Before they could even go and talk to her I made sure to run and talk to her. I offered her a ride home. At that time I had a girlfriend but it was kind of on the decline. We spoke and got to know each other more and that was the beginning of something good. The following Monday, I was excited to see her and trouble her, but she wasn’t there. I found out she was in an accident over the weekend and I went to visit her. She was wearing this neck brace because she had whiplash. Eventually I confessed that I was interested in her and we started dating and the rest is history. We’ve been married for eight years and December 2016 will be nine.

Drs Ryan and Yinka Halsall:

I met my wife at work. I was her boss initially. Funnily, though the attraction was there, she disliked me as I was ‘too strict’. After she left the department and moved on, I called her up one day randomly and we ended up talking for hours. Eight years and three kids later, we always look back at that time and have a good laugh.

Ruth and Horace Perkins:

Ruth and Horace Perkins:

Horace and I met at our annual Church of the Nazarene youth camp at Munro College in 2003. We usually saw each other at previous church camps but I always thought he was cocky and he thought that the ladies from my church, myself included, were somewhat fussy. I do not remember how we eventually spoke to each other that year in 2003, but I was captivated by his mesmerising bass voice and he was attracted to my ‘natural girl’ beauty. I also thought and still think that he was very handsome, being six feet three inches tall with a dark chocolate complexion. We spoke every night at camp that year and on the final day of camp we exchanged numbers. I gave him three numbers so he couldn’t say he called and didn’t get me. We dated for two years before we got married. It’s been 10 years now, two children, and a few challenges, but we are still happily married.

Chenere Goulbourne and Sean Bernard:

Chenere Goulbourne and Sean Bernard:

I guess he saw me at some football match and liked me and pressured my friend Buya every day to get my number. Eventually, Buya told me and I told Buya to have him message me on Facebook . We began texting each other and I hated messenger so I gave him my number. Eventually we met for the first time at a match and the next day he brought me to Kingston when school was about to resume. We texted every day after that until we both fell for each other.

Monique Minto and Roshane Holness:

Monique Minto and Roshane Holness:

We both went to high school together and we never ever exchanged words throughout our tenure. To my surprise a few years ago Roshane saw me during the Christmas holiday in my hometown waiting to use the ATM. I saw him staring me down, but as was the usual with us, no words were exchanged. After this encounter, a few days later I received a message from an unknown number saying ‘hi’. Curious, I politely asked who it was. He identified himself and I quickly went to Facebook to search to see if it was really him, and of course it was. I saw that he had matured over the years and thought to myself that he was surely now more handsome. I made other queries, including the source of my number, which he admitted to have taken from a friend’s phone with whom I went to high school. Though reluctant, we eventually formed a beautiful friendship, which has over time developed into a steel-strong union — together we can weather any storm.
