Adult caregiver training
THE University of the West Indies’ Mona Ageing and Wellness Centre, under the directorship of Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer, CD, and in collaboration with the Centre for Outreach in Alzheimer’s, Ageing & Community Health, will host older adult caregiver training classes starting August 16 through to September 8.
The training programme is being organised as a community outreach intervention targeting the specific needs and issues of concerns for caregivers of older adults.
Key topics to be addressed are ageing 101, understanding Alzheimer’s, three common chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension and cancer), understanding and dealing with ageing parents/relatives, communicating with older adults, and end-of-life issues. The training targets family members of older adults, caregivers, practical nurses, social workers as well as persons with an interest in caregiving. The training includes a field trip, and participants will receive a certificate of participation upon successful completion of the training.
