Do’s and don’ts of Christian dating
IT is often said that there are two goals when dating — either you get married or break up.
Fact is, this period of a single person’s life is really meant to get to know people and decide whether you need to save your dignity and leave or become committed.
But for Christians, while the rules of dating are pretty much the same except that you’re limited to dating other Christians, there are a few Do’s and Don’t’s that many Christians overlook during this period.
Below, Reverend Everald Galbraith, president of the Jamaica District, Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas, shares a few:
Don’t’s
1. Do not go to secluded areas
In this instance anything can happen, therefore it is best to go to public places as it allows for some level of accountability.
2. As far as is possible, avoid alcoholic beverages
This may lead to drunkenness, which the
Bible repeatedly warns us against.
3. Limit your touching and avoid petting
This arouses passion, which may lead to sexual sin.
4. Do not dress provocatively
This can be a temptation and the
Bible says that we should not do things that will cause our brother to stumble.
5. If both parties are very attracted to each other, invite someone else to the activity
Again this allows for accountability and the unlikely occurrence of anything sexual.
6. Avoid engaging in discussions about sex
Unless this is done in a moderated format like an open discussion at a youth fellowship, young Christians who are dating should refrain from such discussions as a couple.
Do’s
1. Keep the discussion centred on religious, cultural or educational things
This will help to focus the discussion away from romance and sex, resulting in less temptation.
2. Speak about your faith and try to see if the person’s perspectives mesh with yours
Try to find out if you share similar interests and decipher from early if you’re unequally yoked.
3. Try to make your dates a group activity
This will lead to more meaningful discussions, which may highlight aspects of your personality that may not come out in an intimate setting.
4. Be honest with each other
It is important not to hide things from the one you’re dating, as exposure by other means may end negatively.
5. Be respectful of each other’s views
You won’t agree on everything, therefore it is important to show respect at all times.
