Remember: The role of women in SDGs

IN recent media reports, the Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland has stated that the under-representation of women and increasing gender inequalities must be reversed if Sustainable Development Goals are to be met.

For her, gender equality across political, business and civil sectors will provide the economic value needed to curb global issues such as climate change.

The point she made, however, is that gender equality is not just about fairness, but capitalising on huge economic opportunities that are frequently missed as those affected most — women — are often excluded from discussions surrounding the issue.

Remember, the Sustainable Development Goals have set, among other things, targets for effective climate change planning in least developed and developing states that focus on women, children and marginalised communities.

In order to meet these goals, the Commonwealth Secretariat said inclusively incorporating women in all decision-making processes is vital, as advancing women’s political participation, leadership and economic empowerment are critical building blocks for achieving all of the SDGs.

If we intend to meet the 2030 targets set for SDG goals, gender equality and inclusion have to be at the forefront of planning in order to effectively reach those involved.
