Signs your relationship won’t work
SUCCESSFUL relationships require much work, but sometimes, regardless of how much effort is placed in trying to make the relationship work, it’s just not meant to be.
When this is the case, there are usually signs or red flags that stick out like a sore thumb. Below, relationship counsellor Wayne Powell shares 19 signs your relationship won’t work.
1. Your partner teases you in a hurtful way in private or in public.
2. Your partner calls you names such as “stupid” or “bitch”.
3. He or she acts jealous of your friends, family, or co-workers.
4. Your partner gets angry about clothes you wear or how you style your hair, without reason.
5. Constant check-ups by calling, driving by, or getting someone else to “keep an eye on you”.
6. He or she insists on knowing with whom you speak while on the phone.
7. Your partner blames you for his or her problems or bad moods.
8. He or she is so easily angered that you feel like you’re walking on eggshells.
9. Dangerous driving or other actions aimed at scaring you.
10. Your partner uses drugs or illicit substances and encourages you to do the same.
11. He or she forbids you from seeing friends and family members.
12. You’re constantly accused of infidelity
13. Your partner reads your e-mail, goes through your purse or wallet, and other personal papers.
14. He or she keeps money from you and keeps you in debt.
15. Your partner prevents you from getting a job, and has caused you to lose a job.
16. You, your children, family, friends, or pets are threatened.
17. He or she forces you to have sex when you do not want to and in ways that you don’t want to.
18. Your partner threatens to kill you or himself if you leave.
19. Your partner acts like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde — acting one way in front of other people and another way when you are alone.
Powell said if these apply to you, you are definitely involved in a dysfunctional relationship and need to make a decision that will ensure your peace of mind and physical well-being.
“Ignoring the red flags is akin to deliberately walking in the path of an oncoming train — you are bound to be destroyed. Don’t hesitate to get professional help. If you feel threatened, make a report to the local police without delay.”
