Stupid things I’ve done for love
WE’VE all done strange things in the name of love — some that we would prefer to forget, and others that we can regard with amusement now.
Whether it’s walking miles to meet someone or running up high telephone bills to impress someone you thought was special, we have all been down the road of doing stupid things in the name of love.
Below readers share their stories.
Ricardo Johnson:
I dated a girl who lived in Mona and at the time I was staying with my sisters in Patrick City. I was unemployed and had no money to waste. But she always liked when I came to visit her, so I developed a plan. I told her that whenever she wanted to see me, she should just let me know from the day before and I’d be sure to come. So whenever she did that, I just got up early and walked to her home in Mona, spent the day and walked back. When she was leaving for college she didn’t tell me, she just left without a word. I can laugh about it now, but my sisters think I was pretty dumb and love-struck back then to walk such a distance to see someone.
Kelly Jones:
I was in a long-term relationship with a guy, then he cheated on me. He said he was sorry and wanted my forgiveness. I told him I forgave him, but I also wanted to see if he was really sorry. So I told him I was pregnant, hoping he would have come around and shown more care and affection. Big mistake. He bolted.
Trishaun McBean:
I was in high school and was madly in love with this guy I had met the previous summer while I was on vacation in the country with my family. It was the days of land lines and we exchanged numbers; however, I thought having the phone meant unlimited calls. So we chatted and chatted and chatted and the bill went sky high. My parents were very upset and deducted the cost of it from my lunch money for the entire school year.
Tony Martin:
I was living in Clarendon and met a girl in May Pen who told me she lived in Manchester. After I got her number, she told me to meet her in Mandeville one day. I got on a bus and got too comfortable, because I realised I was lost when I saw a “Welcome to St Elizabeth” sign.
Melissa Palmer:
I had my friend text my boyfriend to discuss with him how he felt about me. But it went further than that. They started texting on a different level, and today they are married.
Vanessa P:
I totally destroyed his car because I suspected that he was cheating. When I say destroy, I mean I took a hammer and smashed it when I saw it outside an apartment building after I trailed him one night. It turns out that the nights he wasn’t answering his phone he was actually visiting a sick relative and trying to make her last days better by reading to her.
